As the Russia-Ukraine war enters its fifth year, Ukraine held widespread commemorations to honour those killed in the conflict, with ceremonies, vigils and moments of silence taking place across the country. The solemn events reflected both mourning and determination as citizens, servicemembers and international leaders paid tribute to the hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians who have died since Russia’s full-scale invasion began on 24 February 2022.
In Kyiv’s Independence Square, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy joined European officials — including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen — in a vigil at a memorial site for fallen soldiers. Lanterns were placed and wreaths laid to honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice defending Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Across the capital, moments of silence stopped daily life as thousands observed the anniversary in quiet reflection. In towns such as Bucha, where some of the war’s worst atrocities occurred, citizens laid flowers at military cemeteries and memorial sites, recalling loved ones and friends lost to combat and violence.
The commemorations come amid continued fighting, with military operations and aerial bombardments ongoing along the front lines. Ukraine’s armed forces remain engaged in defensive operations even as they mark another year of war. Casualties continue to mount, with analysts and officials estimating high numbers of military and civilian deaths since the invasion began.
Zelenskyy has emphasised that Ukraine has “defended its independence” and maintains resolve despite the staggering human cost of the conflict. Speaking on the anniversary, he reiterated the nation’s refusal to relinquish territory or compromise on fundamental national principles, underscoring the enduring spirit that has characterised Ukraine’s response to Moscow’s aggression.
International responses to the anniversary also highlighted solidarity with Ukraine’s sacrifices, as government leaders and diplomatic representatives from across Europe echoed calls for sustained support, continued sanctions on Russia and efforts toward a lasting and just peace.
