A burglar who was caught inside a family home in Whitley Bay in broad daylight gave a bizarre explanation when confronted by the homeowner, according to reports presented in court.
The incident occurred when a mother unexpectedly returned to her house during the daytime and discovered a man inside her bedroom. The suspect had reportedly entered the property without permission and was searching through belongings when he was interrupted.
Shocked by the discovery, the homeowner confronted the intruder directly. Rather than fleeing immediately, the man allegedly offered an unusual excuse for being inside the house, claiming he had entered the wrong property. His explanation quickly raised suspicion as it became clear he had no legitimate reason to be inside the building.
Police were later called to the scene and arrested the suspect shortly after the incident. Officers confirmed that the man had gained entry to the property without the owner’s knowledge while she was away earlier in the day.
The case was later heard at a local magistrates’ court, where details of the break-in were presented. Prosecutors said the burglary took place during daylight hours, a time when many residents would normally expect their homes to be secure.
According to court statements, the intruder had already entered the bedroom and begun searching through personal items before the homeowner unexpectedly walked in. The sudden encounter left the resident frightened and confused as she tried to understand why a stranger was inside her home.
When questioned by the homeowner, the suspect reportedly insisted that he had mistakenly entered the property. The explanation was described in court as implausible given the circumstances and the evidence indicating that he had deliberately entered the house.
Investigators later determined that the suspect had accessed the property through an unlocked entry point before moving through the home. Police said there was no indication that he had any connection to the residents.
Cases of daytime burglary can be particularly unsettling for homeowners because they occur when people are more likely to return unexpectedly. Criminal justice officials say many burglars rely on quick entry and exit during periods when houses appear unoccupied.
However, such crimes carry significant risks for offenders. Encounters with residents can escalate quickly, leading to confrontations or immediate police involvement.
In this case, the unexpected return of the homeowner effectively interrupted the burglary before any items could be taken. Prosecutors told the court that the suspect’s explanation about entering the wrong house did not match the evidence gathered by investigators.
The court heard that the man had previously been involved in criminal offences, which prosecutors argued demonstrated a pattern of unlawful behaviour. Defence lawyers acknowledged the seriousness of the incident but attempted to mitigate the circumstances surrounding the break-in.
Magistrates ultimately found the suspect guilty of burglary after considering the evidence presented. Sentencing reflected the seriousness of entering a private residence without permission and the distress caused to the victim.
Local authorities have used the case to remind residents about home security precautions. Police advise homeowners to ensure doors and windows are securely locked and to report suspicious behaviour in residential neighbourhoods.
Whitley Bay, a coastal town in North Tyneside, generally records relatively low levels of serious crime, but incidents such as burglary can still occur and often leave lasting impacts on victims.
For the homeowner involved in the case, the experience of encountering a stranger inside her bedroom during the middle of the day was understandably alarming. Police officials say such incidents highlight the importance of vigilance and community awareness in preventing opportunistic crimes.
While the suspect’s unusual excuse may have attracted attention during court proceedings, authorities stressed that burglary remains a serious criminal offence with potentially significant legal consequences.
