Published: 3 April 2026 . The English Chronicle Desk. The English Chronicle Online—Reporting on the courage and coordination of our emergency services.

A major overnight operation in County Down has successfully prevented a rural tragedy. More than 40 firefighters battled through the night to bring a fierce blaze under control at a large hay shed in Banbridge, following an emergency call received at 9:03 PM on Thursday, 2 April. In a high-stakes race against time, the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) confirmed that 300 sheep housed within the structure were led to safety just as the fire began to take hold.

The scale of the fire, located at a property on Cascum Road near the Boulevard shopping complex, required a massive deployment of resources.

  • Specialist Teams: The NIFRS dispatched its dedicated Large Animal Rescue Team from Newcastle, Co. Down. Working in thick smoke and intense heat, the team managed to evacuate the entire flock of 300 sheep without a single reported loss of life.

  • Firepower: Six fire appliances and over 40 personnel were on-site throughout the night. Area Commander Suzanne Fleming noted that the initial priority was life safety—both human and animal—before transitioning to defensive firefighting.

By Friday morning, 3 April, the blaze remained active, though contained. Firefighters faced a significant challenge common in agricultural fires: deep-seated heat within the hay itself.

  1. Mechanical Intervention: Crews utilized a telehandler (a telescopic handler) to physically remove smoldering bales of hay from the shed. This allowed firefighters to douse the material directly and prevent the structural collapse of the building.

  2. Prolonged Operation: A spokesperson for the NIFRS warned that operations are likely to continue for “some time” today as they work to extinguish the final hotspots and ensure the site is safe.

The incident has highlighted the vulnerability of farms to rapid-onset fires, particularly in storage sheds where dry hay can act as a potent accelerant. “The speed of the response was critical,” said one local resident. “If that animal rescue team hadn’t arrived when they did, we’d be talking about a very different story this morning.”

As the smoke clears over Banbridge, the 300 sheep are reportedly being monitored in nearby fields, largely unaffected by their close brush with the inferno. For the NIFRS, the successful rescue stands as one of their most significant animal welfare operations of the year, underscoring the vital role of specialist rescue units in rural communities.
