‘Tragedy on Our Streets’: Man Arrested for Drug Driving After Six-Year-Old Boy Killed in Ellesmere Port

A community in Cheshire has been left in mourning following the tragic death of a six-year-old boy who was struck by a car in Ellesmere Port on Sunday morning. Cheshire Constabulary confirmed today that a 48-year-old local man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, drug driving, and driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence. The incident, described by investigators as a “harrowing event for all involved,” occurred on Anchor Drive at approximately 11:40 a.m. on April 19, involving a black Infiniti FX30D.

The sequence of events following the collision painted a desperate scene of family and emergency response. Reports indicate that the boy’s family initially attempted to rush him to the hospital themselves. However, they were intercepted by police and paramedics near the Whitby Sports and Social Club on Chester Road, where emergency crews took over life-saving efforts. The child was subsequently transported to the Countess of Chester Hospital, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries later that day.

Cheshire Police have launched a full investigation, with specialist officers currently supporting the grieving family.

Detective Sergeant Iain Condliffe, of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, emphasized the commitment of the force to establishing exactly what took place. “This was a tragic incident in which a young child lost his life,” Condliffe said. “We are keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the initial collision on Anchor Drive, or anyone with any video footage or dashcam footage of the incident.” Police are also specifically looking to speak with anyone who was present near the Whitby Sports and Social Club when the boy was being treated by paramedics.

The arrest has reignited concerns over the rising rates of drug-related driving offenses in the UK. Road safety advocates have noted that 2026 has seen a marked increase in roadside drug-test failures, particularly in suburban residential areas. “When you mix narcotics with a ton of steel on a residential street, the results are almost always catastrophic for the most vulnerable,” said a spokesperson for a national road safety charity.

The 48-year-old suspect has since been released on bail pending further enquiries, a standard procedure as toxicology reports and forensic vehicle examinations are completed. For the residents of Ellesmere Port, the sight of floral tributes appearing near Anchor Drive serves as a somber reminder of a Sunday morning that changed a family forever.
