Passengers at Manchester Airport experienced flight delays on Friday morning following an unusual incident involving two easyJet planes. The aircraft, identified as flight EZY2267 from Manchester to Gibraltar and flight EZY2117 from Manchester to Paris Charles De Gaulle, appeared to clip their wings while taxiing on the runway, prompting a brief suspension of all flights.
The incident occurred early in the day, causing disruption as airport authorities conducted safety assessments of the affected planes. Although operations have since resumed, delays are expected to persist throughout Friday, with flights departing Manchester currently averaging a 48-minute delay, according to FlightRadar data.
An easyJet spokesperson confirmed the details of the collision: “easyJet can confirm that the wing tips of two aircraft came into contact whilst taxiing to the runway at Manchester Airport this morning. The aircraft returned to stand to disembark customers, who have been provided with refreshment vouchers whilst replacement aircraft are arranged to operate the flights. We apologise to customers for the delay to their flights. The safety of our passengers and crew is our highest priority.”
The airline has also launched an immediate investigation to determine how the incident occurred, emphasizing its commitment to passenger and crew safety. Airport staff conducted a thorough safety check before normal operations resumed, ensuring that all departing and arriving flights could continue without further disruption.
Passengers reported temporary confusion and minor inconvenience as the airport managed the logistical challenges of rescheduling and accommodating affected travelers. EasyJet is working to provide replacement aircraft for both flights to minimize further delays and ensure that passengers reach their destinations safely.
While such incidents are rare, aviation experts note that wingtip collisions during taxiing can occur in busy airport environments, particularly when aircraft are maneuvering in close proximity. Authorities have stressed that no injuries were reported and that safety protocols were strictly followed during the incident.
Manchester Airport continues to operate with heightened monitoring, and passengers are advised to check with airlines for the latest updates regarding their flights. The incident has drawn attention to the complexities of airport ground operations and the importance of rigorous safety procedures in managing air traffic efficiently.
