Liverpool manager Arne Slot has admitted to exchanging messages with Newcastle United counterpart Eddie Howe, revealing the respect he holds for the Magpies boss even as tensions rise over the ongoing transfer saga surrounding striker Alexander Isak. The Premier League clash at St James’ Park on Monday evening promises to be charged, with Liverpool pursuing Isak, who has gone on strike in an effort to force a move to Anfield.
Slot confirmed that Howe is the only fellow Premier League manager he has shared text communications with, citing a longstanding professional respect and admiration. “In general, I have sympathy for Eddie Howe because he is a great human being, he’s always polite, so that is my general feeling about him,” Slot said. He further praised Howe’s management and character, suggesting that it would not be surprising to see him eventually lead the England national team. “It’s maybe not a coincidence that I’ve texted with him because I think he’s a very nice and honest, polite colleague,” Slot added.
The relationship between Liverpool and Newcastle, however, is under pressure due to the high-profile pursuit of Isak. Liverpool’s attempts to secure the forward, including a reported £110 million bid, have created friction between the clubs. While Slot refrained from speculating on whether these events have damaged relations, he acknowledged that the atmosphere at St James’ Park could be intense. “Because it was very intense the last time we played there as well. It’s actually always that way when Newcastle play a home game, let alone an evening game,” he said.
Newcastle will approach the encounter without Isak and with a squad that has yet to make all of its summer transfer targets, although signings including Anthony Elanga, Jacob Ramsey, Malick Thiaw, and Aaron Ramsdale have bolstered the team. The absence of key forwards and the failure to replace departed striker Callum Wilson leave Newcastle light in attack, intensifying the scrutiny on Howe’s squad ahead of the fixture.
Slot highlighted the mutual connection he shares with Howe through Richard Hughes, Liverpool’s sporting director, who previously worked with Howe at Bournemouth and played alongside him at Portsmouth. This relationship, Slot noted, is part of the reason for their cordial exchanges. Despite acknowledging Howe’s strong squad, Slot emphasized his respect for the Newcastle manager, saying, “You don’t need to have sympathy for a manager who has so many good players in his squad. But in general, I think I like him and I don’t think it will be a surprise to anyone if eventually he is going to lead the national team of England as well. Good human being and a very good manager.”
On the Liverpool side, Slot confirmed that the squad is balanced despite ongoing transfer speculation. The manager indicated that the additions of Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz provide sufficient attacking depth following the departures of Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz, and the injury-enforced absence of Diogo Jota. When asked if he would seek further reinforcements, Slot stated: “That’s the answer, yeah,” confirming his satisfaction with the current composition of his squad.
As Liverpool prepare to face a fervent Newcastle crowd, the match carries not only the weight of Premier League points but also the backdrop of one of the season’s most high-profile transfer sagas. Fans and players alike are expected to contend with the intensity of both the game and the surrounding media scrutiny, as the outcome could influence the next chapter in the Isak transfer drama.
