Published: 23 December 2025. The English Chronicle Desk. The English Chronicle Online.

Guardian readers have collectively donated over £500,000 to this year’s Hope appeal, providing crucial support to grassroots charities that unite divided communities, promote tolerance, and actively tackle racism and hatred. The 2025 Guardian appeal focuses on funding five key charities: Citizens UK, the Linking Network, Locality, Hope Unlimited Charitable Trust, and Who Is Your Neighbour?, all of which implement hands-on projects aimed at fostering empathy, trust, and positive social change.

These partner organisations deliver a wide range of initiatives, including affordable housing schemes, youth clubs, arts projects, and community food kitchens. Each project works directly with local communities to tackle pressing societal issues, giving citizens practical ways to contribute to meaningful change. The appeal was launched earlier this month as a counterpoint to rising extremism, anti-migrant rhetoric, and a resurgence of “1970s-style racism,” offering hope and optimism during unsettling times.

Among the highlighted projects is SaSh, a Jewish-Muslim food kitchen supported by Hope Unlimited, which combats hatred and hunger with determination and joy. One donor shared, “The story about SaSh was beautiful and gives me hope,” reflecting the appeal’s impact in touching hearts. SaSh trustee Andrea Chipman emphasised the importance of local action, stating, “When everything’s feeling a bit hopeless, [it’s] a very local hands-on way where you can make a difference,” encapsulating the spirit of the 2025 appeal.

Other notable initiatives include Taj Ali’s Guardian film showcasing Back on the Map, a Sunderland community organisation revitalising neighbourhoods affected by far-right riots in 2024, and Helen Pidd’s report on Who Is Your Neighbour?’s pioneering work facilitating “difficult conversations” to bridge divides. These stories have resonated widely with donors, with one noting, “This country is full of decent and wonderful people who want to help those around them. Hate doesn’t help those who are in need, love and kindness do.”

Gurinder Josan Singh, chair of Hope Unlimited, expressed gratitude to Guardian readers for their generosity. He highlighted that donations to local organisations confronting hate and division directly would create tangible differences in fostering community cohesion and hope. Guardian editor-in-chief Katharine Viner reinforced this message, stating, “Our charities – and the projects they support – are united in the belief that however loud the forces of hate and division, they will never drown out the values shared by the vast majority: tolerance, compassion, and common humanity.”

The 2025 Guardian Christmas appeal demonstrates the power of collective generosity to support inclusive, community-driven initiatives. Through funding practical projects, the appeal encourages citizens to take action against social division, promoting meaningful dialogue and providing opportunities for local engagement. As grassroots organisations continue to deliver services addressing crucial needs such as affordable housing, youth engagement, and food security, donations ensure these initiatives can thrive and expand.

Hope Unlimited and its partner charities emphasise that community change starts at the local level. Each project funded by the appeal empowers volunteers and local leaders to address societal challenges head-on, fostering empathy and understanding. By highlighting success stories such as SaSh and Back on the Map, the appeal reinforces that even small, hands-on actions can make a lasting difference in overcoming prejudice and creating inclusive neighbourhoods.

The appeal’s success also demonstrates how media-driven initiatives can mobilise support for community causes. Guardian readers’ contributions not only provide vital financial assistance but also signal a broader societal commitment to compassion and tolerance. This response underscores a shared desire among citizens to counter hate with meaningful engagement, reflecting the values of humanity and solidarity that underpin successful grassroots initiatives.

By combining funding with media advocacy, the Guardian’s 2025 appeal has created a powerful platform for raising awareness of community projects tackling discrimination, intolerance, and social fragmentation. Through storytelling and practical action, the appeal connects donors with initiatives where their support has tangible impact, reinforcing hope and resilience within communities across the UK.

The Hope appeal’s achievements exemplify how coordinated efforts between charitable organisations and engaged citizens can address systemic challenges while promoting unity. With continued support, these projects aim to expand their reach, create sustainable change, and inspire further contributions. Guardian readers’ response demonstrates the enduring capacity of public generosity to foster local solutions to deeply entrenched social problems, proving that hope and collective action can prevail over division and hate.

The 2025 appeal serves as a reminder that positive change is achievable when communities work together. By highlighting and funding initiatives dedicated to tolerance, compassion, and human connection, the Guardian fosters an environment where social cohesion and empathy can flourish. These combined efforts underscore the lasting impact that charitable contributions, media engagement, and grassroots dedication can have in creating a more inclusive society.
