Microsoft co‑founder Bill Gates has abruptly withdrawn from delivering a keynote speech at India’s flagship AI Impact Summit, days after newly released Epstein files reignited scrutiny over his past ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The move dealt a notable blow to the high‑profile event, which has aimed to position India as a global leader in artificial intelligence.
Gates was scheduled to headline the summit in New Delhi alongside global leaders and tech executives, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Google CEO Sundar Pichai. However, the Gates Foundation announced that he would not deliver his address “to ensure the focus remains on the AI Summit’s key priorities,” withdrawing just hours before he was due to speak.
The decision follows growing media and public attention on the release of millions of US Department of Justice documents tied to Epstein’s activities, which include communications involving Foundation staff. While Gates has strongly denied any wrongdoing and said past meetings with Epstein were a mistake connected to philanthropic discussions, the resurfaced material sparked controversy and criticism from some quarters.
In Gates’ absence, Ankur Vora, president of the Gates Foundation’s Africa and India offices, stepped in to deliver remarks at the summit. Organizers stressed the Foundation’s continued commitment to advancing health, development and technology goals in India despite the high‑profile withdrawal.
The summit, expected to draw significant investment pledges and spotlight discussions on AI governance and innovation, has also faced organisational challenges, including traffic snarls and display controversies that have drawn criticism from visitors and opposition politicians alike.
Despite the disruption caused by Gates’ cancellation and other high‑profile absences, the six‑day AI Impact Summit has recorded substantial interest, with organisers indicating billions of dollars in pledges for AI infrastructure and partnerships involving Indian companies and global tech firms.
The English Chronicle will continue to follow this developing story as reactions unfold and the implications of the controversy on global tech diplomacy are assessed.
