The World Economic Forum (WEF) president and chief executive, Børge Brende, has resigned following a review of his past contacts with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, marking another high‑profile fallout linked to the ongoing disclosures known as the Epstein files. Brende, a former Norwegian foreign minister who led the Geneva‑based organisation — famous for its annual Davos summit — stepped down after more than eight years in charge.
The WEF launched an independent investigation into Brende’s relationship with Epstein after documents released by the U.S. Justice Department showed that Brende had attended three business dinners with Epstein and had exchanged emails and text messages with him between 2018 and 2019. In his resignation statement, Brende described his time with the Forum as “profoundly rewarding” and said stepping aside was the right decision so the organisation could continue its work “without distractions”. He did not mention Epstein directly in his farewell remarks.
The review by external legal counsel — overseen by WEF co‑chairs Andre Hoffmann and Larry Fink — found no additional concerns beyond what had already been disclosed, the Forum said. Despite that conclusion, Brende’s departure reflects the intense scrutiny faced by leaders whose names have appeared in the newly disclosed files, which have implicated numerous prominent business and political figures worldwide.
The Forum’s Board of Trustees has appointed Alois Zwinggi, a senior management board member, as interim president and CEO while a search for a permanent successor is underway. WEF officials praised Brende’s leadership — particularly through a period of internal reform and successful annual meetings — but said the organisation must guard its reputation and mission amid ongoing public attention on the Epstein files.
Brende’s resignation follows a broader wave of resignations and professional consequences for global leaders whose contacts with Epstein have emerged from the files. The revelations have triggered debate over transparency, judgement, and accountability among influential figures in policy, business, education and beyond.
