Israel has carried out renewed military strikes deep inside Tehran and against positions in southern Beirut as the wider Middle East conflict continues to expand. The latest Israeli air operations reportedly hit strategic military targets in Iran’s capital and key Hezbollah infrastructure in Lebanon’s capital. These actions come amid strong warnings from U.S. leadership that the most forceful phases of the campaign against Iran’s military capabilities have yet to occur, signalling an escalation rather than a winding down of combat operations.
The wider war emerged after initial U.S.–Israeli strikes on Iran’s nuclear and missile infrastructure earlier this week, actions that included strikes around Tehran and allegedly the killing of senior figures within Iran’s command structure. Iran’s response has been characterised by waves of ballistic missiles and drone attacks targeting Israel and U.S. military installations and allied facilities across the Gulf region.
In Beirut, prolonged exchanges between Israel and Hezbollah have resulted in civilian deaths and widespread destruction in southern suburbs, forcing mass evacuations and deepening Lebanon’s involvement in the conflict. Iran’s allies, including Hezbollah, have framed their involvement as a defensive response to what they describe as existential threats.
The United States has publicly warned that the initial strikes represent only part of its operational campaign, with senior officials signalling that more severe attacks on Iranian forces and capabilities could follow to achieve strategic objectives. Meanwhile, Iranian missile and drone barrages have struck U.S. embassies and bases across the Middle East, including in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, intensifying regional instability.
Global diplomatic institutions, including the United Nations Security Council, have expressed deep concern over the rapid escalation, urging restraint and a return to negotiated solutions even as the conflict shows no clear end in sight.
