Pop superstar Harry Styles has spoken publicly for the first time about the emotional impact of his former One Direction bandmate Liam Payne’s death, revealing that the loss prompted deep reflection on his own life and priorities. Speaking in a wide‑ranging interview on Apple Music with Zane Lowe, Styles described how Payne’s sudden passing in October 2024 led him to re‑evaluate how he wants to live and what truly matters.

Styles, now 32, acknowledged that grieving under the spotlight was intensely difficult, saying he “really struggled” with the experience and with the public’s expectations about how he should express his grief. He explained that losing a close friend who shared many similarities with him — both personally and in their early careers with One Direction — was uniquely painful and made him question his own approach to life and work.

“It’s so difficult to lose a friend,” Styles said, adding that it was especially hard because Payne was someone “so like you in so many ways.” Payne, who was 31 at the time of his death after falling from a hotel balcony during a visit to Buenos Aires, Argentina, was a key figure in One Direction’s rise to fame and remained a close friend thereafter.

The singer explained that the tragedy encouraged him to take stock of his personal goals. “It was a really important moment for me in terms of taking a look at my life and being able to say to myself, ‘OK, what do I want to do with my life? How do I want to live my life?’,” Styles said. He added that the way to honour friends who have passed is to “live your life to the fullest,” suggesting that Payne’s legacy has influenced his mindset as he continues his career and prepares to release his fourth solo album, Kiss All The Time, Disco, Occasionally.

Styles also touched on the awkwardness of sharing grief in the public eye, noting that fans and media can inadvertently shape how artists express their loss. He said there was a period after Payne’s death when he felt the need to navigate those expectations while staying true to his own emotional experience.

The interview marks the first extended reflection Styles has offered about Payne’s death, coming more than a year after the bandmate’s passing and after he first paid tribute alongside former One Direction members Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson. Their joint statement at the time described the group as “devastated” and referred to Payne as a beloved friend and brother.

As Styles continues promoting his new music and charting a path forward, his comments reveal how personal loss has shaped both his artistic outlook and his broader perspective on life.
