Australia’s Prime Minister has moved to calm public fears over fuel shortages after panic buying swept across the country, leaving long queues at petrol stations and reports of stockpiling. The government insists that national reserves remain secure and that supply chains are functioning, despite heightened concerns triggered by global energy market volatility.
Speaking at a press conference in Canberra, the Prime Minister acknowledged the anxiety among Australians but urged restraint. “We have sufficient reserves, and our supply lines are stable. There is no need for panic buying,” he said, adding that the government is working closely with industry leaders to ensure distribution remains uninterrupted.
The surge in demand has been linked to fears of disruptions in international oil shipments, compounded by recent geopolitical tensions. Analysts note that while Australia imports the majority of its fuel, contingency measures and stockpiles are designed to withstand short-term shocks.
Energy Minister officials confirmed that additional monitoring has been introduced to prevent hoarding and ensure equitable access. Fuel retailers have also appealed to customers to purchase responsibly, warning that panic buying itself could create temporary shortages.
The crisis comes amid broader global uncertainty, with fluctuating oil prices and supply chain disruptions affecting multiple countries. Australia’s government has emphasised that it is prepared to release emergency reserves if necessary, but stressed that current supplies remain adequate.
