Global Finance Leaders Raise Alarm Over Anthropic Mythos AI

A shadow has fallen over the spring meetings of the IMF and World Bank in Washington this week, as finance ministers and central bankers from the world’s leading economies shifted their focus from inflation to a new, existential threat: Claude Mythos. The latest artificial intelligence model from US-based Anthropic has been labeled “too dangerous for the public” by its own creators, sparking a frantic diplomatic and regulatory scramble to protect the global financial system from what experts describe as an unprecedented “cyber-offensive” capability.

Unlike previous AI iterations, Mythos possesses an autonomous ability to identify and exploit software vulnerabilities at a pace that dwarfs human teams. In internal testing, the model reportedly discovered thousands of previously unknown “zero-day” bugs in major operating systems and web browsers—some of which had remained hidden for over 25 years. For the banking sector, which relies on a fragile patchwork of modern interfaces and decades-old legacy code, the emergence of Mythos represents a “clear and present danger” to the infrastructure of global payments and trading.

The rhetoric from global leaders has been uncharacteristically blunt. European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde warned that if the model “falls into the wrong hands, it could be really bad,” while Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne compared the systemic risk to a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. “The difference,” Champagne noted, “is that we know where the Strait is. We don’t yet know the full extent of where these AI vulnerabilities lie.“

In the UK, the Bank of England and HM Treasury have convened urgent meetings with “The Big Four” banks to assess their resilience. While Anthropic has launched Project Glasswing—a controlled initiative giving select banks early access to Mythos for “self-auditing” purposes—international ministers are raising serious concerns about information sharing. There is a growing fear among non-US officials that American banks are receiving a “head start” in shoring up their defenses, leaving European and Asian institutions as the “soft underbelly” of the global network.

Key Figures Official Stance / Action Taken
Scott Bessent (US Treasury) Summoned Wall Street CEOs for an “urgent” security briefing.
Bank of England Initiated simulations to test Mythos’s impact on financial stability.
Elisabeth Svantesson (Sweden) Called for an “early-warning meeting” with ministers and bankers.
FSC (South Korea) Held an emergency review to protect interconnected payment stacks.

The paradox facing regulators is that Mythos is also the most powerful defensive tool ever created. The White House has paradoxically encouraged banks to use the model to “patch themselves” before malicious actors develop similar capabilities. However, security specialists warn that the “democratization” of nation-state-level hacking tools is now inevitable. “AI has reached a level of coding capability where it can surpass all but the most skilled humans,” Anthropic stated in a recent briefing.

As of today, Anthropic has confirmed it will begin expanding Mythos access to British financial institutions within the next week. However, for the ministers gathered in Washington, the arrival of Mythos marks the end of an era of predictable cyber-defense. The race is no longer just between hackers and security teams, but between different versions of autonomous intelligence. As the global financial stack is scanned by an AI that “thinks” in code, the world’s top bankers are left wondering if their decades-old systems can survive the first truly “predatory” era of the digital age.
