A massive industrial blaze has devastated a commercial poultry farm near Nantwich, Cheshire, claiming the lives of a significant number of turkeys and causing extensive structural damage. The fire, which broke out on Sunday afternoon, April 19, at a facility on Peach Lane in Alvaston, required the combined efforts of nine fire engines from across two counties to prevent the inferno from spreading to neighboring agricultural buildings and the nearby Alvaston Hall. While no human injuries were reported, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) confirmed the “devastating” loss of livestock within the 1,500-square-meter barn.
The alarm was raised at 4:04 PM when witnesses reported thick, acrid smoke billowing across the A530 Middlewich Road. Residents walking near the Shropshire Union Canal described hearing “loud cracking and popping” as the wooden and steel structure was consumed by flames. Due to the intensity of the heat and the rural location, fire crews from Nantwich, Crewe, Middlewich, Alsager, Tarporley, Winsford, and Chester—along with a specialist “Scorpion” High Reach Extendable Turret from Staffordshire—were scrambled to the scene. Firefighters were forced to run hundreds of meters of hosepipe along the driveway of Alvaston Hall to secure a sufficient water supply from nearby outlets.
Firefighters utilized thermal imaging and high-pressure spikes to penetrate the roof of the 60m x 25m shed, battling to cool the interior where the poultry were housed.
| Resource Type | Quantity / Unit | Role in Incident |
| Fire Engines | 9 | Initial suppression and water shuttling. |
| Specialist Turret | 1 (Scorpion) | Piercing roof space for internal cooling. |
| Personnel | ~45 Firefighters | External and internal structural firefighting. |
| Casualties | “A number of turkeys” | Confirmed fatalities; exact count pending. |
The incident in Nantwich is the second major blow to the poultry industry this month. Just two weeks ago, on April 5, a fast-spreading fire destroyed a large barn at Radnai Farms on the Aldergrove-Abbotsford border, wiping out an entire flock of birds. Animal welfare advocates have noted that 2026 has already seen over 1,000 turkeys lost in barn fires across various territories, reigniting calls for mandatory sprinkler systems in large-scale agricultural sheds. “These are not just financial losses for farmers; they are massive welfare catastrophes,” a spokesperson for a regional agricultural group noted.
By 6:15 PM on Sunday, the blaze was surrounded, and the response was scaled back to seven engines as crews began the grim task of dampening down hotspots and assessing the remains of the flock. CFRS investigators remained on-site through Monday morning, April 20, to determine the cause of the fire, though initial reports suggest it may have been triggered by a fault in the industrial heating or ventilation equipment used to regulate the birds’ environment. For the local community in Nantwich, the smell of “rank smoke” hanging over the fields serves as a somber reminder of the fragility of the region’s intensive farming infrastructure.
