A 45-year-old man, identified as Essa Suleiman, appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court today charged with three counts of attempted murder following a suspected terrorist rampage in North London. Suleiman, a Somalia-born British citizen, is accused of stabbing two Jewish men, aged 34 and 76, in the heart of Golders Green on Wednesday. He faces a third attempted murder charge in relation to a separate knife attack on a resident in Southwark earlier the same day.
The attack has sent the UK’s national security apparatus into overdrive. On Thursday, the government officially raised the national terror threat level to “Severe,” meaning a further attack is considered “highly likely” within the next six months.
The case has reignited a fierce debate over the effectiveness of the UK’s counter-extremism strategy.
The Closed File: It was revealed in court that Suleiman was referred to the government’s Prevent program in 2020. However, his file was closed later that year.
The “Accountability Rot”: Critics are demanding to know why a man with a “history of serious violence and mental health issues” was allowed to fall off the radar, with Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley describing the incident as a symptom of a global “epidemic of antisemitism.”
The Shomrim Intervention: Jurors heard how Suleiman was chased along Golders Green Road by members of the Shomrim (Jewish community security group) before being immobilized by police with a stun gun.
The Golders Green stabbings are the latest in a wave of attacks targeting Jewish sites in the capital.
The Arson Link: Counter-terrorism officers are investigating whether Suleiman’s actions are linked to a string of recent arson attacks on synagogues and Jewish ambulances, some of which were claimed by a group called Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia.
The “Iran Proxy” Theory: Detectives are probing a potential link to Iranian proxies, though Sir Mark Rowley noted it is “too soon” to confirm a direct state-sponsored connection.
The “Dopamine Desert” of Hate: Residents have described a feeling of “clinical silence” and fear, with many noting that while words of condemnation are plentiful, they no longer feel safe walking the streets of their own epicenter.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has vowed to bring the “full power of the state” to tackle this “national security emergency.”
The Funding Boost: An extra £25 million has been pledged to protect Jewish communities, including a permanent increase of 300 police officers dedicated to Jewish neighborhoods to end the “postcode lottery” of safety.
The “Golden Tone” of Solidarity: In a rare move, Buckingham Palace issued a statement saying King Charles III is “deeply concerned,” while Israeli President Isaac Herzog warned the West to “wake up” to the rising tide of anti-Jewish hatred.
As the RHS Wisley wisteria reaches its peak bloom, the contrast between the spring beauty and the blood on the streets of Golders Green is stark. Suleiman has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at the Old Bailey on May 22.
The two victims remain the focus of national prayers; the 34-year-old has been discharged from the hospital, while the 76-year-old remains in a stable condition. For the people of Golders Green, the “loud explosion” of violence this week has changed their community forever. As the Southbank Centre celebrates 75 years of progress, the Albadri and Suleiman cases serve as a reminder that the path to a truly tolerant society remains littered with “unexploded” hatred.
