A 51-year-old man remains in police custody today on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life following a major fire that tore through one of the UK’s most prominent LGBT+ nightclubs. The blaze broke out at Pink Punters in Fenny Stratford, near Milton Keynes, in the early hours of Sunday, April 26, 2026. Dramatic footage shared on social media showed flames licking through the roof and upper floors of the building as hundreds of revellers were evacuated onto Watling Street.
Emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 2:00 a.m., as the venue was reaching its peak Saturday night capacity. At the height of the incident, 12 fire crews from Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service were deployed to tackle the inferno. Despite the scale of the fire, which has left the popular venue with “substantial damage” and its roof almost entirely missing, authorities confirmed that there were no reported injuries.
Police and fire officials have praised the “quick and effective” actions of the Pink Punters security and bar staff, who managed to clear the building within minutes of the alarm sounding.
The Scene Inside: Eyewitnesses described a “normal night” of music and dancing that turned into a “chaotic rush” as staff began ushering people toward the exits. “Out of nowhere, they were screaming that we needed to get out now,” said one clubber, Molly Firman.
The “Legacy” of Pink Punters: Established in 2000, the club is a cornerstone of the regional LGBT+ community, featuring multiple dancefloors and a cellar bar. Local residents were advised to keep windows and doors shut throughout Sunday as heavy smoke blanketed the area.
Community Solidarity: Unit Nine, another Milton Keynes venue, issued a statement of support, noting that nightclubs like Pink Punters are “built on years of hard work, sacrifice, and passion” and serve as a vital “home” for tens of thousands.
The arson arrest comes at a time of heightened sensitivity for the UK’s LGBT+ venues. While Thames Valley Police have taken a local 51-year-old man into custody, they have urged the public to refrain from speculation regarding a possible hate-crime motive.
“At this time, it would be too early to comment on any particular motivation for this incident,” stated Chief Superintendent Emma Baillie, Milton Keynes commander. “We would respectfully ask for people not to speculate as our joint investigation with the fire service continues.”
In a bizarre and unsettling coincidence, Sunday’s nightclub fire occurred just hours after another, smaller blaze damaged St Martin’s Church in the same Fenny Stratford area. While the church’s main structure was preserved, investigators are looking into whether there is any link between the two incidents.
As of Monday afternoon, road closures remain in place around Watling Street while structural engineers assess the safety of the remaining building. The 51-year-old suspect is being held under a charge of arson with intent to endanger life, a serious felony that carries a potential life sentence depending on the severity and intent.
For the LGBTQ+ community in Buckinghamshire, the loss of the venue is being felt as a “devastating blow” to a safe space that has stood for over a quarter of a century. As the “Digital Iron Curtain” of police tape remains around the blackened shell of the club, many are already calling for a community fundraising effort to help the “Pink Punters family” rebuild.
