A 17-year-old boy has appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court today charged in connection with a “cowardly” arson attack on Kenton United Synagogue in Harrow. The teenager, a British national from Brent whose identity is protected by law, was detained alongside a 19-year-old man during a series of coordinated raids late Sunday night. The charge follows a weekend of high tension in North London, during which the synagogue became the latest target in a “sustained campaign of violence” against the capital’s Jewish community.
The incident occurred at approximately 23:35 on Saturday, April 18, 2025. Footage circulated online appeared to show a figure in dark clothing igniting a bottle of liquid—described by police as an “accelerant”—and throwing it through a window into a medical room within the Shaftesbury Avenue building. While the Community Security Trust (CST) confirmed that the fire was quickly extinguished and caused only minor smoke damage, the psychological impact has sent a “low rumbling” of fear through the neighborhood.
Counter-Terrorism Policing London is currently investigating whether this attack is linked to a string of similar incidents targeting Jewish sites over the last month.
| Location | Date | Incident Detail |
| Golders Green | 23 March | Four Jewish community ambulances destroyed by fire. |
| Finchley | 15 April | Attempted arson at a local synagogue. |
| Hendon | 17 April | Firebombing of a former Jewish charity building. |
| Kenton | 18 April | Firebomb thrown through medical room window. |
The Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command has taken the lead on the Kenton investigation, with Deputy Commissioner Matt Jukes noting that the arrests are part of a wider look into “thugs for hire.” Security officials are exploring a “disturbing” lead that these domestic attacks may be orchestrated by foreign proxies—specifically groups suspected to be Iran-backed, such as Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia.
“We are seeing a trend of young individuals being recruited to carry out hostile activity on our streets,” a senior security source told the Chronicle. “This isn’t just local vandalism; it’s a coordinated attempt to destabilize community relations in a ‘troubled’ global landscape.”
The Chief Rabbi, Ephraim Mirvis, visited the site on Sunday, describing the campaign as an attempt to “strip away the safety” of Jewish life in the UK. “To target a place of worship, adjacent to a school and a playground, is the height of cowardice,” Mirvis stated.
The sentiment was echoed by local “Triple-Shift” workers and residents who gathered for a small vigil on Monday morning. “We’ve lived here for decades without this,” said one resident. “It feels like the ‘Human Zoo’ is becoming more aggressive, and the ‘Naked Ape’ instincts of hate are being fed by outside forces.”
The 17-year-old defendant: Charged with arson not endangering life; remanded in custody following his appearance at Westminster Magistrates’ Court today.
The 19-year-old man: Released on bail pending further enquiries.
As police forensics teams conclude their work on Shaftesbury Avenue, the “shaken and stirred” community of Kenton remains under a “Statutory Standard” of increased police patrols. For many, the focus is now on ensuring that the “low rumbling” of hate does not escalate into a more catastrophic event.
