The Princess of Wales is set to host her annual Christmas carol service for the fifth consecutive year, promising a star-studded event that will celebrate love, togetherness, and community spirit across the United Kingdom. Scheduled for 5 December at the iconic Westminster Abbey, this year’s “Together at Christmas” service will feature prominent British actors including Kate Winslet, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Hannah Waddingham, who will lend their voices to heartfelt readings. The service aims to honour those who have gone above and beyond to contribute positively to society, recognising individuals whose acts of kindness and dedication have inspired their communities.
Organisers say the overarching theme of the service, “power of love and togetherness,” was chosen to reflect a world often marked by fragmentation and disconnection, emphasizing the importance of compassion, empathy, and human connection. The service will feature a harmonious blend of traditional and contemporary elements designed to include people of all faiths and none, making it an inclusive celebration of the festive season. Guests will include those nominated by lord-lieutenants across the UK and charities linked to the royal family, alongside special invitees who have demonstrated exceptional acts of love and kindness in the past year.
Musical performances will form a key part of the event, with the Westminster Abbey choir providing a traditional carol repertoire alongside other performances to uplift and inspire attendees. A festive horticultural display, designed by Jamie Butterworth, will highlight the importance of nature in our lives, while the Royal Horticultural Society will contribute wreaths crafted by schoolchildren and ambassadors. These elements aim to bring both beauty and meaning to the ceremony, reinforcing the service’s message of hope, care, and community.
Catherine has used her Christmas services in previous years to highlight themes of empathy, giving, and resilience. Last year, following her personal journey through cancer and her successful course of chemotherapy, she shared reflections on love and the importance of supporting one another, and the service continues this message of hope and togetherness. In 2021, Catherine surprised guests by demonstrating her piano skills in a joint performance with musician Tom Walker, a memorable moment that delighted attendees and highlighted her personal connection to the event.
Beyond Westminster Abbey, the message of love and togetherness will extend across the UK through 15 community-based carol services that will follow the same theme. These will take place in diverse settings, including a community farm in Gwent and an arts centre in Newbury, reflecting the royal family’s commitment to bringing the spirit of Christmas to communities of all kinds.
For those unable to attend in person, the Westminster Abbey service will be broadcast on ITV1 and ITVX on Christmas Eve, with a repeat airing on Christmas Day, allowing audiences nationwide to share in the festivities and celebrate the spirit of the season. This year’s service promises not only to be a celebration of music, tradition, and storytelling but also a poignant reminder of the importance of kindness, unity, and the power of love in a world that can often feel divided.
