Robert Bush Admits 30 Counts of Preventing Burials

In a packed and emotional courtroom at Hull Crown Court yesterday, 2 April 2026, 48-year-old funeral director Robert Bush pleaded guilty to a staggering series of offenses that have been described as “some of the most serious breaches of trust possible.” After a 16-month investigation by Humberside Police, Bush admitted to 30 counts of preventing a lawful and decent burial, as well as theft from 12 separate charities. The Unburied: While families believed their loved ones had been cremated or buried months or even a year prior, police discovered 35 bodies still on the premises. Bush admitted that in 30 of these cases, he had actively prevented their lawful burial.
The Wrong Ashes: In a particularly cruel twist, many families had been given containers of ashes they were told belonged to their relatives. Forensic testing later revealed that these families had been mourning over “unidentified remains” or industrial fillers while their loved ones remained in the funeral home’s storage.
The “Foetus Allegations”: Bush also admitted to four counts of fraud specifically involving pregnancy losses, where he provided women with ashes he falsely claimed were the remains of their unborn children.

Beyond the physical mishandling of remains, Bush’s guilty pleas detailed a sophisticated financial predator.

Charity Theft: He admitted to stealing donations collected at funerals intended for charities including Macmillan Cancer Support and the Salvation Army. Instead of passing the money on, Bush pocketed the “memory money” provided by grieving mourners.
Funeral Plan Fraud: The court heard that over 150 individuals were victims of a fraudulent trading scheme where Bush took payments for pre-paid funeral plans but never placed the funds in the required trusts, leaving families with no provision for their final arrangements.

The atmosphere in the courtroom was one of “audible disbelief and gasps” as the clerk spent over 10 minutes reading out the 31 additional charges Bush admitted to yesterday. Families of the victims, some of whom have organized monthly vigils since the 2024 raid, wept and comforted each other in the gallery. One victim, Karen Dry, whose parents were handled by Bush, called the funeral director a “monster” who had “put us all through hell for his own selfishness.“
