Keir Starmer has been warned that his relationship with Donald Trump may be beyond repair after the former US president mocked the UK prime minister for consulting his team over military decisions.
During an Easter lunch speech at the White House, Trump imitated Starmer in a weak voice, claiming the UK was “not our best” ally. The attack followed Starmer’s refusal to allow the US to use British military bases for initial strikes on Iran.
Diplomatic sources said Starmer was right to ignore the criticism but acknowledged the damage to UK-US ties. One senior diplomat suggested strengthening relations with Canada, Australia, and mainland Europe instead.
Trump’s comments included a caricature of Starmer saying he needed to consult his team before sending old aircraft carriers, even though Downing Street confirmed the US had never requested the vessels.
Former officials and MPs largely backed Starmer’s approach. Emily Thornberry praised his reliance on expert advice, while former ambassador Kim Darroch noted that Starmer’s resistance to direct involvement in the conflict was correct, even if it strained personal relations with Trump.
Starmer emphasized his focus on Britain’s national interest, saying: “I am utterly focused on what is in the best interests of our country and I am unapologetic about that… I will remain laser focused on what is in the British national interest.”
Observers noted that upcoming royal visits to the US might offer opportunities to ease tensions, but warned the unpredictable nature of Trump’s remarks could complicate efforts to repair the relationship. The episode also impacted UK political parties, with Reform UK and some Conservatives reconsidering their positions regarding the Iran war.
