Grammy-winning artist Lil Nas X is on the path toward legal resolution after a Los Angeles judge granted him entry into a comprehensive mental health diversion program. The decision, handed down by Judge Alan Schneider on Monday, April 6, 2026, offers the “Old Town Road” singer a chance to have four felony charges dismissed if he successfully completes a rigorous two-year treatment plan. The legal proceedings stem from a widely publicized and distressing incident in August 2025, when the 26-year-old artist was arrested following a public mental health crisis in the San Fernando Valley.

The original charges included three felony counts of battery with injury on a police officer and one count of resisting an executive officer. According to court documents and police reports, Montero Hill—known professionally as Lil Nas X—was found walking along Ventura Boulevard wearing only white briefs and cowboy boots. Authorities alleged that during the encounter, the artist charged at responding officers, resulting in minor injuries to three of them. Following his arrest, Hill was hospitalized for what was initially feared to be an overdose but was later identified as a manifestation of a severe mental health episode.

During the court hearing at the Van Nuys courthouse, Judge Schneider noted that the incident appeared to be “aberrant from his normal conduct” and was directly linked to the artist’s recent diagnosis of bipolar disorder. The defense provided evidence that since the arrest, Hill has shown significant commitment to his recovery, including a voluntary two-month stint at an inpatient facility in Arizona. The judge remarked that when treated, the artist is much better off, and by extension, society is better off. The two-year diversion program, officially known as a “postponement of prosecution probation,” requires Hill to follow a strict psychotherapy regimen, obey all laws, and refrain from possessing firearms.

Exiting the courthouse in a sharp black suit, a visibly relieved Lil Nas X shared his gratitude with reporters and fans. He described the period following his arrest as “terrifying” but expressed deep thankfulness for the opportunity to prioritize his health over incarceration. “I’m thankful. Just very thankful. It could have been much worse,” he told Rolling Stone outside the courtroom, adding that he was simply “going through the flow of life.” His legal team emphasized that this outcome is a victory for mental health advocacy, highlighting the importance of treatment-based diversion in cases where behavioral health challenges are the primary driver of legal conflict.

The case will remain under judicial supervision until April 2028. If Lil Nas X adheres to the terms of his treatment and maintains a clean record during this window, the felony charges will be formally dismissed and cleared from his record. As the music industry continues to grapple with the pressures of fame and the necessity of mental health support, Hill’s journey serves as a high-profile example of how the justice system can pivot toward rehabilitation. For now, the artist remains focused on his recovery, with his legal progress set for a formal review in late July.
