The mother of one of the two Jewish men stabbed in a suspected terror attack in North London yesterday has told the BBC she is “horrified” that such an atrocity could happen on the streets of the capital. Speaking from the bedside of her son, who remains in a stable but shaken condition, the woman—whose identity is being protected for security reasons—delivered a poignant plea for the safety of the Jewish community, describing the current climate of antisemitism in Britain as a “breaking point.”
The attack, which took place in the heart of Golders Green on Wednesday morning, saw a 34-year-old man and a 76-year-old man targeted by a knife-wielding assailant. The Metropolitan Police have officially declared the double-stabbing a terrorist incident, with counter-terrorism officers now investigating potential links to a recent string of arson attacks on synagogues across London.
In an interview with BBC Breakfast this morning, the victim’s mother described the moment she received the news that her son had been attacked while leaving morning prayers.
“I am horrified that these things can happen on London’s streets in 2026,” she said. “My son was simply walking to his car, minding his own business, and he was hunted because he was visibly Jewish. He told me he saw the anger in the man’s face. It is a miracle that he is still here with us.”
She echoed the sentiments of Shilome Rand, the 34-year-old victim who spoke to ITV yesterday, stating that the government is “not doing its job” in protecting the community. “We feel abandoned,” she added. “When you are afraid to walk to your own synagogue, something has gone fundamentally wrong in this country.”
The Golders Green community, one of the epicenters of Jewish life in the UK, has been left reeling.
The Victims: The two men, named locally as Nachman Moshe (34) and Moshe (76), are both recovering in hospital. The older victim was reportedly attacked while waiting at a bus stop.
The Suspect: A 45-year-old man remains in custody on suspicion of attempted murder. Police revealed today that the suspect has a “history of serious violence and mental health issues,” but the targeted nature of the attack led to the terror declaration.
The “Shame” on the Met: Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley faced heckles of “shame on you” and calls to resign from local residents when he visited the scene yesterday. Many in the community feel that the police response to a six-month surge in antisemitic incidents has been “woefully inadequate.”
In response to the attack and the mother’s harrowing testimony, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood today declared antisemitism in the UK an “emergency.”
£25 Million Lifeline: The Treasury has announced an immediate £25 million ($34 million) funding boost for the Community Security Trust (CST) to increase police patrols and private security around Jewish schools, synagogues, and community centers.
COBRA Meeting: Prime Minister Keir Starmer held an emergency COBRA meeting this morning, vowing to “deal with the roots of extremism” and promising that “attacks on British Jews are an attack on Britain itself.”
The “Iran Link”: Counter-terrorism detectives are investigating whether the attacker was influenced by or linked to Iranian proxies, following reports of foreign state-sponsored cells operating within the UK to target Jewish and Israeli interests.
The attack has cast a somber shadow over the King’s state visit to Washington. Both Buckingham Palace and the White House issued statements of “grave concern” today. For the King, who has long championed interfaith harmony, the news of “carnage” on London’s streets has brought a domestic crisis to the forefront of his international diplomacy.
As the police cordon in Golders Green is finally lifted, the mother of the victim offered a final, chilling warning to the BBC: “If my son isn’t safe at the bus stop, then no one is safe. We are at a crossroads, and I don’t know if our community can survive this level of hate.”
