The grand decision by Fifa to expand the field for the 2026 World Cup to forty-eight teams came with a beautiful, democratic promise. The global governing body declared that this historic expansion would grant smaller, less traditional footballing nations a genuine opportunity to taste ultimate glory. Yet history reminds us that football is a sport where elite giants traditionally rule with iron fists. To this very day, only eight different countries have ever lifted the iconic men’s World Cup trophy aloft. Despite this historical monopoly, very few former champions arrive at this summer’s tournament looking entirely invincible.

Reigning continental champions Spain are a highly popular pick among pundits, given their immense wealth of world-class technical talent. The legendary Argentina squad will desperately hope to defend their global crown after also conquering the Copa América recently. Meanwhile, the formidable French national team tops global power rankings after reaching the last two prestigious tournament finals. Their superstar talisman Kylian Mbappé confidently claims this current squad is the finest he has ever played with. Beyond these brilliant heavyweights, however, major question marks begin to emerge for almost all the remaining traditional superpowers.

The English squad strolled comfortably through their qualification group but looked thoroughly unimpressive in their recent friendly matches. Brazil encountered immense difficulty during their qualification campaign, suffering an unprecedented six defeats under manager Carlo Ancelotti. The German team boasts incredible young prodigies but lacks a dependable, elite striker to lead their front line. Uruguay remain an unpredictable longshot under the tactical guidance of Marcelo Bielsa, while Italy completely missed out again.

The True Frontrunners

The newly introduced Round of thirty-two presents a dangerous, unpredictable hurdle capable of tripping up any heavy favorite. Compounding this challenge, competing squads must successfully navigate massive travel distances alongside expected historically high summer temperatures. Furthermore, exceptionally expensive match tickets may create highly intense, demanding atmospheres within packed, expectant stadiums. These combined factors suggest that global football fans could witness a genuinely historic, surprise winner this year.

Among the nations chasing their first title, Portugal stand out as a beautifully balanced, formidable contender. Success was never guaranteed for the Seleção last century, but modern times have seen them build immense staying power. This current group represents their finest all-around tournament squad since lifting the European Championship trophy back in 2016. Crucially, this tournament will almost certainly represent the magnificent international swansong for the legendary Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo featured prominently during qualification, though he has not played since receiving a red card against Ireland.

While his declining physical speed complicated the 2022 campaign, Portugal now possess exquisite balance behind their aging superstar. The exceptional Vitinha is arguably the world’s finest midfielder, controlling matches with immense tactical intelligence and precise passing. Rising star João Neves has emerged beautifully alongside him, while Bruno Fernandes arrives playing at his absolute peak. The Portuguese defense looks considerably more solid now, with Gonçalo Inácio proving a highly dependable partner for Rúben Dias. Nuno Mendes remains an elite full-back, while goalkeeper Diogo Costa provides immense confidence behind a sturdy defensive line.

The Determined Chasers

The Netherlands represent another massive footballing powerhouse desperate to finally overcome their historical World Cup heartbreaks. The brilliant Dutch squad breezed through European qualification, scoring twenty-seven goals while remaining entirely undefeated across eight matches. Collective team unity is always the central focus for this proud nation, but an unfortunate injury hurts them. A severe knee injury to Xavi Simons robs manager Ronald Koeman of some heavily needed, creative attacking unpredictability. The Dutch possess incredible depth across defense and midfield, but lacking a clinical goalscorer has frequently hampered them.

Morocco enter this tournament carrying immense belief, with some fans viewing them as rightful African continental kings. The Atlas Lions will not surprise opponents like they did in Qatar, where they reached the semi-finals. Their previous historic success has forged an experienced, highly disciplined squad playing with a massive point to prove. Fans should closely watch teenage midfield prodigy Ayyoub Bouaddi, who recently committed his international future to Morocco. This exceptionally talented youngster enjoyed a breakthrough club season in France and fills an urgent area of tactical need.

Fellow African giants Senegal also arrive with a highly experienced, deeply motivated core of exceptional veteran leaders. Legendary goalkeeper Édouard Mendy, defensive rock Kalidou Koulibaly, and midfielder Idrissa Gueye provide immense, invaluable tournament experience. All-time leading goalscorer Sadio Mané remains the undisputed heartbeat of an incredibly proud, hard-working national football program. Exciting younger players have started earning opportunities, with midfield starlet Habib Diarra tipped to catch the global eye. Meanwhile, Japan look incredibly dangerous under Hajime Moriyasu after recently defeating England in an impressive friendly match.

The Outside Outsiders

Turning our attention to North America, the three tournament co-hosts face wildly contrasting definitions of true success. Canada dream of escaping the group stage for the first time, boasting fine strikers but lacking defensive depth. United States manager Mauricio Pochettino is still adjusting to international management while aiming for a historic quarter-final run. Mexico traditionally perform brilliantly on home soil, and teenage phenom Gilberto Mora could become the breakout star of summer. None of the co-hosts look capable of winning the trophy, but they will certainly provide high drama.

South American contenders Ecuador represent an incredibly fascinating longshot, having trailed only Argentina during their grueling qualification campaign. While their overall squad lacks depth, they possess one of the most formidable defensive units in the world. Legendary striker Enner Valencia remains their primary attacking threat, consistently producing magic moments when his nation needs them. Turkey also return to the world stage after twenty-four years, boasting incredible individuals like Hakan Çalhanoğlu. Their highly disciplined, aggressive defense will make them a nightmare opponent for anyone during the knockout rounds.

Finally, the flawless qualification campaign of Norway has sparked immense excitement after a twenty-eight-year tournament absence. The Norwegians won all eight matches while scoring thirty-seven goals to book their place at the tournament. While questions remain over their goalkeeper, they possess an incredible weapon that no other country can match. Erling Haaland is widely considered the most lethal, devastatingly effective striker currently playing the game of football. If midfielder Martin Ødegaard remains fully fit, Norway could easily destroy the dreams of several traditional heavyweights.
