Police in Belfast have arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder following what authorities described as a “brutal” knife attack that left one person seriously injured.
Emergency services were called to the scene after reports of a violent assault involving a bladed weapon in a residential area of the city.
The victim received emergency medical treatment at the location before being transported to hospital, where they remain under specialist care.
Detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland confirmed that a suspect was later detained as part of an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Officers described the incident as extremely serious and said inquiries are continuing to establish the sequence of events leading up to the assault.
Forensic teams remained at the scene for several hours collecting evidence, while temporary cordons and road restrictions were put in place around the affected area.
Residents reported seeing a large police presence as investigators conducted door-to-door inquiries and reviewed nearby CCTV footage.
Authorities have appealed for witnesses and anyone with mobile phone or dashcam footage to come forward to assist the investigation.
Community representatives condemned the violence and expressed concern over the impact of knife crime on public safety in local neighbourhoods.
Criminal justice analysts noted that attempted murder investigations involving bladed weapons often involve extensive forensic examination and witness testimony.
Police have not publicly confirmed a possible motive, and detectives said multiple investigative lines remain active.
Further legal proceedings are expected following continued questioning of the suspect and evidence review by prosecutors.
