The Viking Row: Norway’s Viral World Cup Phenomenon

Published: 03 July 2026. The English Chronicle Desk. The English Chronicle Online.

The fans have done it in their thousands inside every stadium. The players have done it on the pitch throughout this tournament. Pretty much anyone who was there did it in New York’s Times Square. Norwegian MPs even did it together in their national parliament. Prince Sverre Magnus, third in line to the throne, rowed in a carriage. Care home residents in their nineties rowed in the quiet of rural Norway. Norwegian Royal Air Force pilots rowed inside their F-35 fighter jets during flights. Forget the Icelandic thunderclap that took over the 2016 European football championships. The Viking row is the synchronised rowing chant taking over the 2026 World Cup. It accompanies the Norwegian football team’s appearances as the undisputed viral phenomenon of sports.

When their team advanced to the last sixteen this week, history was truly made. It was their best World Cup run since the famous tournament back in 1998. The hordes of jubilant supporters rowing en masse in Oslo and Bergen were loud. They produced so much sound that local seismologists actually recorded a small ground tremor. This is bigger than football, star striker Erling Haaland posted on his social media. He shared a clip of the squad rowing after their win against Côte d’Ivoire. He told reporters that seeing thousands rowing with you creates a massive energy surge. It really gives you goosebumps when you see the stadium move in that rhythm.

Captain Martin Ødegaard led the squad row with a drum grabbed from the stands. He said seeing a whole section of the stadium rowing makes you feel united. It makes you realise you are not just eleven guys on the pitch today. You are a whole crew fighting for the same goal in the tournament now. It is an unbelievable feeling that carries the team through the hardest of matches. The action generally starts with the blowing of a loud, deep Viking horn. It involves sitting down as if in a longboat to prepare for battle. To an accelerating drumbeat, fans draw an imaginary oar through the water. They are rhythmically chanting Ro, which is the Norwegian word for the action of rowing.

Unlike most football chants, whose precise origins are often impossible to determine by historians, this is different. Norway’s Viking row was consciously devised, carefully rehearsed, and then massively promoted online today. Ole Frøystad, a primary school teacher now known as mr.row.row, came up with the idea. He remembered the rhythmic chant that rings round the stadium of the football club Rosenborg. Ro, he thought, sounded just like row, making it a perfect fit for fans. From there, it was simple for him to imagine the potential for a viral moment. He thought it was exactly what the Vikings did when they rowed into battle.

They took in their sails, they put out their oars, and they rode into shore. It was just like a lightbulb turning on in his head during the match. With the movement and the way we move the body, it looks amazing. It was going to be like a massive wave at the stadium for everyone. It was going to be great to see thousands of people participating together soon. Frøystad had been looking for a chant that was short, easy, and had culture. He took the plan to Torstein Hamran, a leading member of the Norwegian supporters’ club. They loved it too and wanted to make it happen for the national team.

Hamran and other supporters tried it out in a stadium back in March. They quickly realised it needed more work to get the timing just right. In the run-up to Norway’s last friendly before the World Cup, they posted videos. These videos showed exactly how to do it so fans could learn the rhythm. Frøystad posted a video from that game to his Instagram account for the world. It has since garnered more than thirty-eight million views and three million likes. That was when he realised this is going to be absolutely insane for us.

Norway’s football team began adopting Viking imagery back in the year 2023 clearly. The players began sporting shirts with their names written in the ancient runic script. For the 2026 World Cup, their official team photo shows them ready. They wear leather and furs while holding shields and swords for the camera. Not everyone is impressed, with some noting that the Vikings’ reputation is for pillaging. Janne Stigen Drangsholt, a columnist, criticised an unhealthy masculinity aesthetic in the trend. She spoke of a toxic, rather laddish vibe that did not sit well globally. Another commentator, Hans Petter Sjøli, told national media it was a little too loud. He thought the display was too Disney-like for us Norwegians to take seriously today.

Others have expressed concern about the use of Norse imagery in this public setting. They noted that in Scandinavia, Norse symbolism is often associated with far-right extremist groups. Norway’s neighbours have complained that they were Vikings too, which adds some tension. We just sigh when we see it, the Sweden defender Gustaf Lagerbielke said. But maybe we are sighing more at the TV crews that zoom in. But whatever floats your boat, he added regarding the rowing movement of the fans.

Swedish historians have highlighted a glaring historical inaccuracy regarding the rowing tradition in history. It was eastern Vikings, mainly from modern-day Sweden, who were famous for river rowing. The western Vikings, from Norway, were the great transatlantic sailors of the ancient world. So, the Norwegians are celebrating their football team’s performances by imitating Swedish Vikings. Stockholm pundits argue that point whenever they get the chance to speak on air. Be that as it may, the chant has won over many common Norwegian citizens. They have posted countless videos of themselves rowing in kitchens and offices everywhere.

While Norwegian tourism bosses hail attention that money cannot buy, some remain quite skeptical. The MP Mímir Kristjánsson dismissed the criticism as absurd in a recent public statement. He insisted that Nazis do not own Thor, Odin, or the gates of Valhalla. He stated that Norway must bring its own culture to the World Cup stage. The speaker of Norway’s parliament, Masud Gharahkhani, organised the mass parliamentary rowing session. He said it was for love and to show support for the team. We are a country of five million people, and this is huge. The passion is real, and the Viking row continues to capture hearts globally.
