Two young British mothers, who had been enjoying what should have been the final night of their summer holiday, are now fighting for their lives in Spanish hospitals after a devastating road accident in Ibiza. Lauren Holmes, 27, and Ebony Cordingley, 26, were struck by a taxi in the early hours of Tuesday morning as they were reportedly returning to their hotel after a meal. Both women sustained severe injuries, leaving their families and friends in the United Kingdom reeling in shock and appealing for support.
According to relatives, the two mothers had spent a quiet evening together, playing in a park, walking, and later sharing food, before attempting to cross a road near their accommodation. Ebony’s sister Shannon explained that neither woman had been drinking nor leaving any nightclub, but had simply been walking back after dinner, unaware of the dangers of traffic in that area. “They weren’t drinking, weren’t leaving any clubs,” she said. “They played in a park on swings, went for a walk, went for food then walked back to their hotel not realising the dangers of the roads around there.”
Spanish authorities confirmed that the driver of the taxi, a 24-year-old Spanish man, was subjected to a drink-driving test following the incident. At present, no arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing, with local media reporting that police are examining the circumstances leading to the collision.
The injuries sustained by both women have been described as catastrophic. Ms Cordingley, a mother of three from Shipley, West Yorkshire, was initially declared to be in a critical condition. Doctors informed her family that she had suffered multiple fractures, including a bilateral lower limb fracture, broken ribs, bleeding on the brain, and a punctured lung. Emergency surgery was carried out to address her most serious wounds, and while her condition has since stabilised, she faces an uncertain and prolonged recovery. Her sister, who has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for medical support and childcare for Ebony’s three young sons, described the family’s struggle as “overwhelming” and warned that her sister’s road to recovery will be long and painful.
Lauren Holmes, a 27-year-old mother of two, remains in intensive care at a separate hospital. Her injuries are similarly grave, including two broken legs, a broken arm, fractured spine, broken ribs, and a punctured lung. Her family revealed that an air ambulance has provided them with a quote to bring Lauren back to the UK for specialised treatment. In a public statement, they expressed their determination to get her home but acknowledged that the cost of repatriation, alongside ongoing care, is immense. “Lauren is desperate to come home to receive her treatment that she so desperately needs,” the family said. “We don’t know what the future holds but we are holding onto hope. Your kindness will make a massive difference as we face the long road ahead to get our girl home.”
Both families have now set up online fundraising pages to cover the costs of medical care, rehabilitation, and the urgent needs of the children who have been left without their mothers. Public support has begun pouring in, with donations and messages of solidarity arriving from across the UK and beyond. The appeals highlight the additional financial burden faced by families when medical emergencies occur abroad, especially when specialised transport and long-term care are required.
As the investigation continues, the accident has raised renewed questions about road safety in Ibiza, where traffic accidents involving tourists are not uncommon. Local reports suggest that pedestrian safety measures in certain tourist-heavy areas remain inadequate, and campaigners have previously called for more awareness and protective measures to safeguard visitors.
For now, the focus remains firmly on the recovery of the two young mothers whose lives were changed in an instant. Their families remain by their bedsides, holding onto hope that both women will one day return home to their children. The wider community, meanwhile, continues to rally in support, united by the hope that Ebony and Lauren will overcome their injuries and eventually rebuild their lives.
