The latest Premier League weekend produced a mixture of emphatic victories, defensive concerns, individual breakthroughs and unresolved questions across the division. Manchester City’s commanding win at Liverpool provided the most striking result, while Tottenham Hotspur showed signs of progress under Roberto De Zerbi despite another uneven performance. Arsenal benefited from an important contribution by Noni Madueke, Chelsea continued their impressive habit of starting quickly and several clubs were left confronting weaknesses that could become increasingly significant as the season develops.

Manchester City’s 3-0 victory at Liverpool was both a statement on the pitch and a reminder of the controversy surrounding the club away from it. City’s players appeared liberated by the opportunity to concentrate entirely on football, producing a performance that demonstrated their ability to compete at the highest level despite the continuing questions surrounding the club’s unresolved legal situation.

The atmosphere at Anfield was inevitably charged. Supporters used chants and gestures to express their feelings towards City, while the visiting players celebrated a victory that inflicted significant damage on Liverpool. For City, the result represented a moment of sporting vindication. For the wider Premier League, however, it also highlighted the uncomfortable reality that the league continues to operate while major questions surrounding City remain unresolved.

The controversy is unlikely to disappear because of one impressive result. If anything, the performance at Anfield could increase pressure for a definitive resolution to the legal issues. Chants accusing City of cheating are likely to follow the team to other grounds, ensuring that the dispute remains part of the conversation around matches throughout the season.

Liverpool’s problems were equally apparent. Andoni Iraola’s attempt to reshape the team is still at an early stage and will require patience. Liverpool showed considerable energy and aggression during the first half, successfully unsettling City and creating periods of uncertainty for their opponents. However, their performance lacked the finishing quality needed to turn pressure into goals.

The absence of Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo reduced Liverpool’s attacking options, while Ryan Gravenberch’s dismissal fundamentally altered the contest. Before the red card, Liverpool had generated opportunities that could have changed the outcome. Afterwards, City gained greater control and ultimately exploited the numerical advantage.

Several Liverpool players offered encouragement, including Lewis Koumas, who worked hard in an emergency central attacking role, while Víctor Muñoz continued to provide energy. Yet the responsibility for providing the final attacking quality rests heavily on expensive signings such as Bradley Barcola and Florian Wirtz. The German midfielder, in particular, will remain under scrutiny as Liverpool search for consistency.

Crystal Palace, meanwhile, demonstrated that a team does not always have to dominate a match to collect valuable points. Pierre Sage’s side defeated Nottingham Forest 3-1 despite admitting that they benefited from some fortune. Goalkeeper Walter Benítez was particularly important during a difficult opening period when Forest created several chances.

Sage will be encouraged by the result but concerned about Palace’s defensive performance. Conceding so many opportunities is unlikely to be sustainable against stronger opponents. The return of Axel Disasi after suspension should strengthen the defensive options, although his availability will not extend to the upcoming meeting with Brighton.

For Palace, however, the victory provides momentum. Sage can now look ahead to a Europa League meeting with Lyon, his former club, with the confidence that comes from winning even when the performance is not at its best. The challenge will be to turn such results into greater consistency.

Everton were left frustrated after failing to secure their first away league victory since February. Ainsley Maitland-Niles endured a difficult afternoon against Hull City, making two costly mistakes in a match that Everton eventually drew 2-2.

His first error allowed Hull to open the scoring after an attempted interception went badly wrong. Everton then fought back and took the lead, only for another defensive mistake in the corner to contribute to Hull’s equaliser. For a team that has struggled to create attacking opportunities, conceding avoidable goals after scoring twice represents a particularly costly failure.

Tottenham’s 1-1 draw at Manchester United provided more encouragement than the result alone suggested. Roberto De Zerbi has repeatedly described Spurs as a work in progress, and there remains plenty for him to improve. Yet the character shown by Tottenham after being reduced to 10 men offered evidence that his approach is beginning to influence the team.

Dominic Solanke eventually scored the equaliser after Tottenham had threatened to level the match. Earlier in the game, Spurs had wasted several opportunities despite showing greater energy than United. Their intensity forced Manchester United into an uncomfortable contest and, at times, exposed the home side’s lack of cohesion.

De Zerbi emphasised the importance of building relationships within the squad, urging his players to work together and develop stronger connections away from the pitch. Progress may be slower than supporters want, but the performance at Old Trafford suggested that Tottenham are moving in a more positive direction.

Arsenal also benefited from an individual stepping up when circumstances demanded it. With Christos Tzolis unavailable through injury, Mikel Arteta selected Noni Madueke on the left against Leeds United. The England winger responded with one of his strongest performances of the season as Arsenal won 2-1.

Madueke’s pace caused persistent problems for Leeds, while his deliveries repeatedly created danger. He produced three chances, the highest total in the match, and recorded eight touches inside the opposition penalty area. His performance was particularly important because he had recently fallen out of the England squad and appeared to be losing momentum.

Arteta’s decision therefore represented both a successful tactical gamble and a reminder of Arsenal’s attacking limitations. The club did not significantly strengthen its forward line during the summer, and injuries could force the manager to make further unconventional selections during a long season.

Chelsea continued another impressive trend by scoring early. Their 5-1 victory over Bournemouth was built around a fast start, with the club scoring inside the opening 10 minutes for the fifth time in six league matches.

Morgan Rogers credited manager Xabi Alonso’s team talks for the team’s ability to begin matches aggressively. Chelsea’s players appear increasingly comfortable taking the initiative early, putting opponents under pressure before they can establish their own rhythm.

That habit could become a significant strength over a long campaign. Early goals change the tactical balance of matches and allow Chelsea to dictate the tempo rather than chase games. The challenge will be maintaining that intensity when opponents become better prepared to counter it.

Aston Villa, however, have reason to be concerned about their home form. Unai Emery’s success has traditionally been built partly on turning Villa Park into a difficult venue for visiting teams, but victory at home has remained elusive this season.

Villa drew 2-2 with Brentford, with Kristoffer Ajer scoring late to secure a point for the visitors. The ongoing reconstruction of the North Stand has changed the appearance and atmosphere of the stadium, and Brentford manager Keith Andrews suggested that playing in a ground with a missing stand can feel unusual.

Villa will have another opportunity to end their home drought when they host Fenerbahce in the Champions League. For Emery, restoring Villa Park’s sense of intimidation could become an important objective as the season progresses.

Ipswich Town provided perhaps one of the clearest signs of survival determination. Gary O’Neil has brought a more resilient character to the team, and their 2-1 victory over Fulham continued a pattern of late resistance.

Ipswich have now scored winning goals after the 90-minute mark three times. Such a habit cannot be expected to continue indefinitely, but it demonstrates that the team remains mentally engaged deep into matches. Their defensive record still requires attention, with only two teams conceding more goals, but the willingness to fight until the final whistle could prove valuable in a relegation battle.

Sunderland, meanwhile, are confronting the consequences of an incomplete squad. The club identified the signing of a specialist right winger as a major summer priority but failed to secure one. That weakness became particularly obvious during their defeat by Brighton.

Sunderland started with two natural right-backs, one of whom was deployed in an advanced position. When Thomas Meunier suffered a hamstring injury, Nilson Angulo was moved from his preferred left side to the right. Without injured striker Brian Brobbey, Sunderland struggled to create a serious attacking threat.

Manager Régis Le Bris may now need to turn to younger attacking options such as Chris Rigg and Chemsdine Talbi. With domestic and European fixtures arriving quickly, squad rotation will be essential, but the lack of attacking depth could make the next few weeks particularly difficult.

Across the division, the weekend demonstrated how quickly early-season trends can become significant. City’s victory has intensified the pressure surrounding its unresolved legal case, Liverpool’s rebuilding project still requires patience and Tottenham are showing gradual signs of improvement. Arsenal have discovered another useful option in Madueke, while Chelsea’s early-goal habit is becoming a defining feature.

Elsewhere, Palace are winning despite occasional defensive vulnerability, Everton continue to pay for costly mistakes, Aston Villa need to rediscover their home strength, Ipswich are demonstrating survival character and Sunderland are being exposed by weaknesses in squad construction.

With the season still developing, none of these trends can yet be considered definitive. But the weekend offered valuable clues about which teams are building momentum and which weaknesses could become increasingly difficult to overcome. The Premier League’s competitiveness means that small tactical decisions, individual errors and moments of inspiration can quickly have major consequences in the race for European places, survival and ultimately the title.
