How City fandom became fiercely defensive

Manchester City’s recent legal troubles have exposed a striking transformation in the way some football supporters defend their club, with online communities becoming increasingly willing to confront journalists, rival fans and critics while showing little willingness to question the club’s ownership.

The debate intensified after an independent commission found Manchester City guilty of serious charges, prompting renewed calls from rival supporters for the club to face substantial sporting consequences. Yet among some sections of City’s fanbase, the response has been one of near-total resistance, with criticism directed at almost everyone except the club itself.

The phenomenon has raised a broader question about modern football fandom: when does loyalty to a team become so powerful that supporters begin defending not only the club but also the interests and reputation of the organisation behind it?

One of the most visible voices in the current debate has been Oasis singer Liam Gallagher, a well-known Manchester City supporter. After rival fans called for City to lose trophies following the commission’s findings, Gallagher responded on social media with an aggressive dismissal of those critics.

His reaction was not isolated. On Bluemoon, one of the largest online communities for Manchester City supporters, thousands of posts have appeared since the original charges were brought against the club. The discussions contain humour, anger, conspiracy theories and fierce criticism of the Premier League and the media, but also reveal a persistent reluctance among some supporters to accept that the club or its owners could have committed serious wrongdoing.

For many long-standing City supporters, the emotional background is important. Manchester City spent decades living in the shadow of Manchester United, with the balance of power between the city’s two major clubs heavily favouring United for much of the modern era.

That changed dramatically after Abu Dhabi United Group acquired Manchester City in 2008. The subsequent investment transformed the club, helping it become one of the most successful sides in English football and a dominant force in the Premier League.

The transformation did more than change City’s position in the football hierarchy. It also changed the emotional relationship many supporters had with their club. Years of frustration were replaced by trophies, elite players, major managerial appointments and sustained success.

For supporters who experienced the club before that transformation, the new era became an important part of their identity. The possibility that the success could be connected to serious regulatory violations is therefore difficult to accept.

Academic research into Manchester City supporters has suggested that the relationship can go further than ordinary football tribalism. Research examining large numbers of online posts found evidence that some sections of the fanbase were prepared not only to overlook ethical concerns surrounding the ownership but also to aggressively attack people who criticised the organisation.

That dynamic is particularly significant because Manchester City’s ownership is connected to the United Arab Emirates, a nation state whose government and political institutions have attracted international scrutiny over issues including human rights and political freedoms.

The question is not whether every City supporter shares the views of the club’s owners. Most supporters are unlikely to have any direct relationship with the political leadership of the UAE. Instead, the issue concerns the way intense attachment to a successful football club can sometimes lead sections of its fanbase to defend the wider reputation of the organisation behind it.

Some academics have described this as a form of political or reputational co-option, where supporters become emotionally invested in protecting the image of an institution because that institution is associated with the success of something they love.

The rise of social media has made this phenomenon considerably easier to observe and, potentially, to intensify.

Three decades ago, football supporters generally experienced their fandom through local communities. A Manchester City supporter might work alongside a Manchester United fan, encounter Liverpool or Arsenal supporters at the pub and regularly debate football with people holding opposing views.

The internet has changed that environment.

Supporters can now spend much of their time inside digital communities populated primarily by people who support the same club. Algorithms can reinforce those communities by repeatedly presenting users with material that confirms existing beliefs and anger towards perceived opponents.

That can create a highly concentrated version of football tribalism. Instead of simply supporting a team during a match, fans may begin to see criticism of the club as an attack on their own identity.

The effect is particularly visible during periods of controversy. When accusations emerge, supporters may initially respond by waiting for evidence or a formal ruling. But once a community becomes convinced that the club is being unfairly targeted, criticism can quickly become interpreted as hostility.

In City’s case, some supporters have argued that the Premier League, rival clubs and sections of the media have been engaged in an unfair campaign against the club. Others have treated the legal proceedings as an existential struggle over the future of football itself.

One supporter reportedly described their identity as being a City fan before being a football fan. That distinction may appear minor, but it reveals how the hierarchy of loyalties can change. If allegiance to the club comes before commitment to the wider sport, supporters may be less inclined to accept decisions that damage their team even when those decisions arise from football’s established regulatory processes.

There is also an important caveat. Online football communities do not necessarily represent the views of an entire fanbase. People who post most frequently are often the most emotionally invested, while quieter supporters may hold more moderate or complicated opinions.

It is also difficult to know how many of the most vocal online supporters live in Manchester, regularly attend matches or have any direct connection to the local community. Some may live thousands of miles away and participate in online discussions as part of a global football identity.

That globalisation of fandom is itself a major development in modern sport.

Football clubs now have enormous international audiences, and supporters can develop strong emotional connections without ever visiting a stadium. Online communities allow those fans to participate in debates, defend their club and develop a shared sense of belonging.

The same process can also create opportunities for wealthy owners and organisations to benefit from the loyalty of supporters.

A successful sports club can provide much more than commercial value. It can generate cultural influence, emotional loyalty and a large international audience. When supporters become personally invested in protecting the club’s reputation, the organisation may acquire an informal network of defenders who respond rapidly to criticism.

This does not mean that every supporter defending Manchester City is consciously defending the UAE government or any political agenda. Many are simply protecting a football club they love and rejecting what they believe is unfair treatment.

But the distinction becomes less clear when criticism of the club’s ownership is treated as an attack on the supporters themselves.

That is where the current controversy becomes relevant beyond Manchester City.

Other football supporters have also expressed concern about the implications of the commission’s findings. Some rival fans argue that the integrity of previous competitions has been damaged if rules were not applied consistently. For those supporters, the issue is not simply whether one club should be punished but whether football’s competitive system can maintain public confidence.

One supporter described the problem in terms of trust, arguing that when people stop believing that rules apply equally, every match and every title can become subject to doubt.

That sentiment illustrates why the Manchester City case has become so emotionally charged. Football depends heavily on collective belief. Supporters accept victories and defeats because they believe the competition is governed by rules that apply to everyone.

When that confidence is weakened, the consequences can extend beyond one club.

Yet the reaction of City supporters also demonstrates the extraordinary power of football identity. For fans who watched their club move from years of frustration to sustained success, the trophies are not simply sporting objects. They are memories, celebrations, friendships and important parts of personal identity.

That makes criticism difficult to separate from emotion.

The challenge for modern football may therefore be larger than Manchester City. Social media has transformed supporters from spectators into permanent participants in the public conversation surrounding their clubs. Their voices can challenge journalists, influence debates and shape perceptions of institutions.

But the same digital environment can also make it harder for supporters to hear arguments that challenge their existing beliefs.

Manchester City’s current controversy has brought that tension into sharp focus. The question is not whether supporters should defend their clubs. Loyalty is an essential part of football culture. The more difficult question is whether loyalty can coexist with the willingness to acknowledge uncomfortable evidence and demand accountability when necessary.

For City supporters, the coming period will test that balance. For football more broadly, the episode offers a warning about what can happen when sporting identity becomes deeply intertwined with online tribalism, enormous financial power and the reputation of institutions far beyond the football pitch.

The future of football fandom may increasingly depend on whether supporters can remain passionate about their clubs without allowing that passion to prevent independent scrutiny. In an era when football clubs can represent cities, corporations, wealthy investors and even nation states, separating love for a team from loyalty to everything associated with it is becoming more difficult than ever.
