A British couple imprisoned in Iran after being accused of espionage have begun a hunger strike in what their son describes as a “cry for help”. Craig and Lindsay Foreman were arrested in January while on an around-the-world motorbike trip. Their son, Joe Bennett, called the charges “ludicrous” and said his mother told him that “not eating was the only power she’s got” during a brief phone call.

The Foremans had valid visas, a licensed guide, and a pre-approved itinerary, following Iran’s strict travel rules. Lindsay had been asking people along their journey about what it means to live a good life, which appears to have contributed to their detainment. Both are being held in Tehran’s notorious Evin Prison and have yet to be officially tried or convicted.

Bennett recently met UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper to discuss their case. The UK government warns against all travel to Iran, citing the risk of arrest for British nationals. Officials say they continue to provide consular assistance and raise the Foremans’ case with Iranian authorities.
