A search is ongoing for a 76-year-old British man who fell overboard from the cruise ship Marella Explorer 2 off the coast of Tenerife.
The Spanish coastguard confirmed it had been coordinating rescue efforts since 09:48 local time on Thursday. The incident occurred while the ship was en route to La Gomera from Madeira, Portugal.
Marella Cruises said the man was “seen entering the water while the ship was on passage” and that it is supporting his family while working closely with local authorities. The ship participated in the search before docking at Santa Cruz de Tenerife early Friday.
The Malta-registered Marella Explorer 2 has 14 decks, 907 cabins, and a passenger capacity of 1,814, according to TUI’s website. Local authorities, the coastguard, and ship personnel continue coordinated efforts to locate the missing passenger.
The Foreign Office has been contacted for comment. Authorities are urging caution and offering updates as the search progresses, while families and fellow passengers await news.
