Police in Leicestershire have launched a public appeal after a goshawk, a protected bird of prey, was found shot and seriously injured in woodland near Melton Mowbray, prompting outrage among wildlife campaigners and calls for information leading to the arrest of those responsible. The incident, described by officers and conservation groups as “brutal and senseless”, has raised fresh concern about illegal persecution of raptors and other protected species in the countryside.
Officers from the Leicestershire Police Rural Crime Unit said the goshawk was discovered on Tuesday morning, emaciated and suffering from gunshot wounds. The bird was taken to a specialist veterinary centre where staff stabilised it, but its prognosis remains uncertain because of damage to its wing and internal injuries. Goshawks are protected under UK wildlife law, and shooting one constitutes a criminal offence punishable by significant fines or imprisonment.
Police believe the bird was targeted sometime over the preceding 24–48 hours, and they are urging members of the public to come forward if they saw any suspicious activity or heard gunshots in the area. Officers said any vehicle movements, individuals carrying firearms or unusual disturbance to woodland habitats in recent days could be linked to the incident. “This was a pointless act of cruelty,” said a senior investigating officer, “and we need the public’s help to identify those responsible.”
Local wildlife groups have expressed shock at the discovery. Goshawks — powerful, secretive raptors known for their agile flight and distinctive barred plumage — are relatively rare in England and often monitored by conservation organisations. They are fully protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, which makes it illegal to injure, kill or possess such birds without a licence. Representatives of wildlife charities have said indiscriminate persecution harms wider ecosystems by disrupting predatory roles that help control pest species.
The injured goshawk’s condition has prompted debate about the motives behind the shooting. Some experts suggest illegal persecution by game‑shooting interests may be a factor, as raptors are sometimes targeted in areas where they are perceived to threaten game birds. However, police have not confirmed any specific motive, and investigators are pursuing all lines of inquiry.
