A second man has been arrested in connection with racist abuse sent via social media to England footballer Jess Carter, authorities confirmed on Wednesday. The arrest comes as part of an ongoing investigation into the offensive messages directed at the 27-year-old defender during the UEFA Women’s Euros in July.
Derbyshire Constabulary reported that a 30-year-old man from Ripley was taken into custody on suspicion of making malicious communications. This follows the arrest of a 59-year-old man from Great Harwood, Lancashire, last week for the same offence.
Cheshire Police Chief Constable Mark Roberts, who leads the National Police Chiefs Council’s football policing unit, condemned the abuse, stating, “Nobody should be subjected to such disgusting abuse, and we want to make it clear that racist abuse of this nature will not be tolerated.”
Carter, who hails from Warwick, previously announced she would be taking a step back from social media after being targeted with online racism during the tournament. Her decision underscores the broader issue of online abuse faced by professional athletes.
The UK Football Policing Unit has been working in coordination with social media companies to identify those responsible for sending the messages. Chief Constable Roberts commended Carter for her resilience, noting, “I would like to commend her for standing up to this abuse and assisting with our investigation.”
The arrests mark a significant step in law enforcement’s efforts to combat online racism directed at sports figures, emphasizing that such behaviour will face legal scrutiny and consequences.
