LIVERPOOL — Tottenham Hotspur produced an emphatic 3-0 victory away at Everton on Sunday, climbing to third place in the Premier League table after nine matches. Yet, manager Thomas Frank maintains a measured perspective, insisting that his side is not yet a genuine title contender this season.

The north London club’s performance at the Hill Dickinson Stadium was a statement of intent. Micky van de Ven opened the scoring with a towering header in the 19th minute, following a precise corner delivered by Mohammed Kudus that found the defender unmarked near the six-yard box. Van de Ven doubled the Spurs’ advantage just before halftime, converting a perfectly curled corner from Pedro Porro. Pape Matar Sarr sealed the win late in the match with a composed finish, giving Spurs a comfortable 3-0 scoreline. The victory not only handed Everton their first home defeat of the season but also showcased Tottenham’s growing cohesion under Frank’s guidance.

Their remarkable away form has largely driven Spurs’ climb up the league table. Of the 17 points they have accumulated so far, 13 have come from matches on the road, a tally that currently stands as the highest among all Premier League clubs this season. While the team now sits just a point behind Bournemouth in second place and five behind leaders Arsenal, Frank’s focus remains on steady progress rather than title ambitions.

“We are at the beginning of building something,” Frank said at his post-match press conference. “I am very happy with a lot of things — the defensive side, mentality, set pieces. But I think there is a bit we need to work on, especially offensively, to be more fluid and creative. It’s a long season ahead, and consistency will be a challenge. We embrace that challenge and aim to take it one game at a time.”

The manager was unequivocal when questioned about Tottenham’s chances of contesting for the title. “No. I think there are probably a few teams ahead of us. I’m only thinking one day, one game at a time. We’ll see where we are in April,” he said, emphasising the need for measured expectations despite the promising results.

Van de Ven, who scored both of Tottenham’s first-half goals, has been a revelation this season. With five goals across all competitions, he has become Spurs’ top scorer and a cornerstone of Frank’s defensive and attacking plans. “First and foremost, he’s really growing, taking big steps,” Frank said. “I’m pleased with his overall development, not just in defence but in leadership. He’s using his pace, positioning, and intelligence better than ever. He’s scoring headed goals, which is crucial for a centre back. That’s been a focus, and he’s executed it brilliantly.”

The young defender’s contribution extends beyond mere goals. Frank highlighted Van de Ven’s work rate and tactical understanding, noting that his pressing and intelligent positioning disrupt opponents’ play and create attacking opportunities for the team. “The way he helps us press, the way he attacks the ball, it makes a difference. That’s key for our style of play,” the manager added.

Everton, on the other hand, struggled to cope with Tottenham’s high-intensity approach. Their defensive shape was repeatedly broken by Spurs’ coordinated pressing and rapid transitions, leaving the hosts chasing the game. Despite their previous unbeaten home run, Everton were unable to contain the visitors’ fluid movement and set-piece prowess.

The win comes at a significant moment for Tottenham, as Frank continues to implement his philosophy after taking over the managerial reins during the summer. The Danish coach has placed a strong emphasis on organisation, discipline, and tactical flexibility, seeking to transform Spurs into a side capable of challenging the Premier League’s traditional heavyweights. While the team has demonstrated notable improvements in away fixtures, Frank is keenly aware that replicating such consistency over a full season is the ultimate test.

“This is just the start,” he said. “Away games in particular are important for building confidence, but we need to maintain this level in every match. Football is unpredictable, and the Premier League is very competitive. Every point matters, so we must continue to work hard and focus on improvement.”

Tottenham’s squad balance has also been highlighted in this campaign. Players such as Pape Matar Sarr have begun to emerge as influential figures, with the young midfielder’s late goal at Goodison Park underlining his growing maturity and composure in key moments. The team’s attacking versatility and defensive stability have complemented each other, giving Frank a platform to gradually build his vision for the side.

Despite the positive results, the manager remains committed to a pragmatic approach. He recognises that Tottenham’s current position in the league table does not automatically translate into a legitimate title challenge. With multiple teams showing strength at the top, including Arsenal and Bournemouth, sustaining momentum over the remaining months will require both tactical acumen and mental resilience from his players.

Frank also addressed concerns about offensive creativity, noting that while the team has been effective on the road, there is room to develop more fluid attacking patterns. “We need to be more free-flowing in attack. Defensively we are strong, but to consistently score and dominate games, we need to improve our movement, passing, and decision-making in the final third,” he explained.

The manager’s cautious optimism is shared by many supporters who are encouraged by Tottenham’s performance but understand the challenges ahead. There is a palpable sense of excitement among the fans as they witness the club’s progress under Frank, especially considering the strong away performances that have demonstrated Spurs’ capability to compete at a high level. Yet, the pragmatic approach of the manager ensures that expectations remain grounded, avoiding the pitfalls of overconfidence.

Van de Ven’s influence on the team cannot be overstated. His aerial dominance, coupled with composure in front of goal, has provided a crucial edge in tight matches. Frank has emphasized that the defender’s growth has been part of a deliberate developmental plan, reinforcing the manager’s broader strategy of nurturing talent while maintaining competitive balance. “He’s learning to lead on the field, and that’s essential for our long-term success,” Frank remarked.

Looking ahead, Tottenham faces a series of challenging fixtures that will test both their tactical discipline and psychological resilience. With European commitments adding to their domestic schedule, managing player fitness and maintaining consistent performance levels will be central to Frank’s approach. The manager remains committed to incremental progress, emphasizing that each game represents an opportunity to learn, adapt, and strengthen the squad.

In conclusion, Tottenham’s commanding 3-0 victory over Everton was a clear statement of intent, highlighting the team’s strengths in organization, set-piece execution, and defensive solidity. Micky van de Ven’s remarkable contribution, alongside Pape Matar Sarr’s decisive finishing, provided the tangible results on the scoreboard, while Frank’s pragmatic management ensured that expectations remain realistic. Although Spurs sit third in the league and boast the best away record thus far, the manager has underlined that title ambitions must be tempered by consistent performance and sustained growth over the long season. Fans can take heart from the impressive display, yet the path to challenging for the Premier League crown remains one game at a time.

Tottenham Hotspur may not yet be Premier League title contenders, but the victory at Everton showcased a squad growing in confidence, cohesion, and tactical understanding. With Thomas Frank guiding their development, the team has the foundations to compete at the highest level, provided they continue to learn, adapt, and seize each opportunity that comes their way.
