Robert Carradine, the American actor known for his roles in Revenge of the Nerds and Disney Channel’s Lizzie McGuire, has died at the age of 71 following a long struggle with bipolar disorder, his family has confirmed.

Carradine’s family issued a statement on 23 February 2026 announcing his death, describing him as “a beacon of light” to those around him. They revealed that he had battled bipolar disorder for almost two decades and expressed a hope that sharing his struggle would help reduce the stigma around mental illness. The family asked for privacy as they grieve the loss.

Born on 24 March 1954 in Los Angeles, Carradine came from a prominent acting family; he was the son of actor John Carradine and brother to actors David and Keith Carradine. He began his film career in the early 1970s, appearing in titles such as The Cowboys (1972), Coming Home, and Mean Streets.

His breakthrough role came in 1984 as Lewis Skolnick in the cult comedy Revenge of the Nerds, a performance that made him a recognizable figure in popular culture. In the early 2000s, Carradine found a new generation of fans with his role as Sam McGuire, the father of the title character in the Disney Channel series Lizzie McGuire and its 2003 film adaptation.

Tributes have poured in from colleagues and fans. Lizzie McGuire star Hilary Duff shared memories of Carradine’s warmth and support on social media, reflecting on the care he showed on set and the sadness she feels over his passing. Jake Thomas, who played Carradine’s on-screen son, also posted a remembrance highlighting his talent, humor, and kindness.

Carradine is survived by his three children — Ever Carradine, Marika Reed Carradine, and Ian Alexander Carradine — as well as grandchildren, extended family, and many friends.
