Iran has postponed the state funeral and farewell ceremonies for Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, originally scheduled for Wednesday evening in Tehran, as US and Israeli military strikes continue to batter the country’s infrastructure and security landscape. The delay was announced on state television, with officials saying the farewell event would be rescheduled at a later date amid unprecedented public interest and logistical challenges.
State media reported that the planned ceremony at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Prayer Hall — part of a three‑day mourning period following Khamenei’s death — would not go ahead as scheduled because authorities anticipated “unprecedented turnout” that could overwhelm available infrastructure and crowd control capabilities. Tehran’s Islamic Development Coordination Council, responsible for organising the event, said the decision was intended to ensure that the ceremony could proceed in a manner appropriate for the “martyred leader.”
Khamenei, who led Iran for more than three decades, was reported killed in joint US‑Israeli airstrikes over the weekend, part of an intensifying military confrontation between Tehran, Washington and Tel Aviv. Missiles and jets have since targeted military and government facilities across Iran, exacerbating security concerns and complicating preparations for national mourning events.
While Iranian authorities did not directly link the postponement to the deteriorating security situation, analysts say the combination of continued bombardment and the challenges of managing massive crowds during wartime likely factored into the decision. Strikes have pummelled parts of Tehran and other major cities, contributing to an atmosphere of heightened tension and uncertainty.
Officials have emphasised that the public will still be given opportunities to pay their respects once a new date and detailed schedule are confirmed. The government’s announcement noted that the funeral procession and burial — set to take place in the holy city of Mashhad, Khamenei’s birthplace — will proceed with full honours at a future time.
The postponement comes amidst growing domestic and international concern about the widening scope of the conflict, with US and Israeli forces continuing coordinated strikes against Iranian military and strategic targets. Tehran’s leadership transition — including the question of Khamenei’s successor — remains a central focus for both regional allies and adversaries as the situation evolves.
The delay of one of the most significant national events in Iran’s recent history underscores the profound impact the ongoing hostilities have had on domestic politics and public life. Authorities have indicated that further details regarding the rescheduled funeral and related ceremonies will be announced once security conditions and organisational preparations permit.
