Britain is expected to suffer the sharpest economic slowdown among major economies as the fallout from the Iran war reverberates through global markets. Analysts warn that the UK’s heavy reliance on imported energy and its fragile post-Brexit trade position leave it particularly vulnerable to the conflict’s impact.
According to forecasts, the war has already driven oil prices to multi-year highs, straining households and businesses. The UK, which imports most of its fuel, faces rising inflation and reduced consumer spending power. Economists say the combination of energy shocks and supply chain disruptions could shave more than a percentage point off growth this year, a heavier blow than that predicted for the US, Germany, or Japan.
The Bank of England has acknowledged the risks, noting that higher energy costs are likely to prolong inflationary pressures. Officials are weighing whether to maintain elevated interest rates to curb price rises, despite concerns that tighter monetary policy could further dampen growth.
The Treasury has sought to reassure the public, insisting that contingency measures are in place to stabilise energy supplies. Yet business leaders warn that prolonged instability in the Middle East could trigger deeper disruptions, particularly in manufacturing and logistics.
Global institutions, including the International Monetary Fund, have echoed concerns, highlighting the UK’s exposure to energy imports and financial market volatility. The IMF’s latest outlook suggests Britain may face the steepest contraction among advanced economies if the conflict escalates further.
For households, the impact is already visible. Fuel prices have surged, utility bills remain high, and consumer confidence has weakened. Economists caution that unless energy markets stabilise, the UK could face a prolonged period of stagnation.
