Specialist officers from the Metropolitan Police’s Counter-Terrorism Command have been formally drafted into a widening investigation following a high-speed vehicle incident that left several pedestrians injured in Central London late last night. While the primary motive remains under intense scrutiny, the involvement of the specialist unit marks a significant escalation in the authorities’ response to what was initially handled as a serious road traffic collision. The incident occurred near a crowded transport hub during the peak of the evening theatre rush, causing widespread panic and the immediate cordoning off of several major thoroughfares as armed response units and emergency services flooded the area.

According to preliminary reports from Scotland Yard, a dark-colored SUV mounted the pavement at considerable speed, striking several bollards and at least four individuals before coming to a halt against a reinforced shopfront. Witnesses at the scene described a harrowing sequence of events, with some reporting that the driver appeared to accelerate intentionally toward a group of commuters. The driver, a man in his early thirties, was apprehended at the scene by two off-duty officers who happened to be nearby. He remains in high-security custody at a South London police station, where he is being questioned under the Terrorism Act, a move that allows detectives extended time to interview the suspect and search his residence and digital devices for potential extremist links or manifestos.

The decision to involve the counter-terrorism team is understood to be a precautionary but necessary step, given the location of the crash and the manner in which the vehicle was operated. Commander Dominic Murphy, the head of the Met’s Counter-Terrorism Command, issued a brief statement in the early hours of this morning, urging the public not to speculate while the “complex and fast-moving” inquiry continues. He confirmed that while no “imminent ongoing threat” has been identified to the wider public, the nature of the event warrants a level of expertise that only the specialist command can provide. Forensic teams have spent the night mapping the trajectory of the vehicle and analyzing debris for any signs of incendiary materials or weaponry, although no such items have been officially confirmed as found.

Of the four pedestrians taken to hospital, two remain in critical condition with life-changing injuries, while the others are reported to be stable. The Mayor of London and the Home Secretary have both been briefed on the situation, with the Home Office reiterating its commitment to providing all necessary resources to the Metropolitan Police. Public transport across the capital experienced significant disruption this morning as several tube stations remained closed to facilitate the ongoing forensic sweep. As the investigation shifts into its second day, the focus has turned toward the suspect’s background and whether this was a premeditated act of violence or a tragic mental health crisis. For a city still deeply mindful of its security, the sight of blue lights and forensic tents in such a prominent location serves as a stark reminder of the constant vigilance required by the nation’s security services.
