In a dramatic reversal that has sent shockwaves through the UK’s justice system, the driver of the Land Rover that ploughed into a Wimbledon primary school in July 2023 has been officially charged with causing death by dangerous driving. Claire Freemantle, 49, is accused of two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and seven counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving following the horror at The Study Prep School, which claimed the lives of eight-year-old schoolgirls Nuria Sajjad and Selena Lau.

The decision to charge comes nearly two years after the initial incident and marks a significant victory for the victims’ families, who have tirelessly campaigned against what they described as an “accountability rot” within the Metropolitan Police’s original investigation.

The case has been mired in controversy since June 2024, when the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) initially ruled that Freemantle would face no further action.

The Original Verdict: Investigators originally concluded that Freemantle had suffered an “unforeseeable” epileptic seizure at the wheel, leaving her “not in control” of the vehicle.

The Reversal: Following a formal complaint by the families of Nuria and Selena, the Met agreed to a specialist review. This fresh look at the evidence led to Freemantle’s rearrest in January 2025 and the subsequent decision by the CPS to reverse its stance.

The Plea: Freemantle’s legal team has already confirmed she intends to plead not guilty to all charges, stating there are “serious questions to be answered” regarding why the decision not to prosecute was overturned.

The charging of Freemantle is only one half of the legal storm now surrounding the Wimbledon crash. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is currently investigating 11 Metropolitan Police officers for gross misconduct.

Allegations of Racism: The watchdog is probing whether the race of the victims’ families influenced the “poor standard” of the initial inquiry.

False Information: Officers are accused of providing “false and misleading information” to the families during the early stages of the investigation.

Command-Level Probe: Those under investigation include a Commander and a Detective Chief Inspector, highlighting a systemic failure that has forced the Met to issue a public apology and announce a “fundamental reset” of how it investigates fatal collisions.

The crash remains one of the most harrowing events in recent London history. It occurred on July 6, 2023, during an end-of-term tea party on the school lawn.

The “Silent” 4×4: The Land Rover Defender crashed through a wooden fence and into a building where families had gathered to celebrate the start of summer.

The Toll: Beyond the two young lives lost, 14 others were injured. The trauma of that day has left a permanent scar on the Wimbledon community, many of whom have described a “dopamine desert” of grief as they waited 33 months for today’s development.

A “Golden Tone” for the Families: In a joint statement, the families of Nuria and Selena welcomed the charges, noting that “the truth must come to light” and that “justice has no expiry date.”

Claire Freemantle is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on June 16, 2026.

National Security Emergency: The case has been reframed as a “national emergency” for road safety, with the Met promising better support and “better outcomes” for victims of serious collisions moving forward.

The “Hormuz” Distraction: While global news is currently dominated by the $126 oil spike and the Iran war, the Wimbledon charging serves as a reminder that domestic justice remains the primary concern for British citizens.

As the RHS Wisley wisteria provides a somber, blooming backdrop to a city still in mourning, the focus now shifts to the courtroom. For the families who have lived through nearly three years of “clinical silence” and frustration, the first step toward true accountability has finally been taken.
