A 16-year-old boy has been charged with murder after police investigating the disappearance of 13-year-old Layla Jeffery discovered human remains in bushland near the Victorian town of Donald, bringing a tragic end to a search that had gripped the close-knit rural community.

Victoria Police confirmed on Saturday evening that detectives from the Missing Persons Squad had formally charged the teenager with one count of murder following an intensive investigation into Layla’s disappearance. The accused is expected to appear before a Children’s Court for a remand hearing, where the legal process will begin.

Because the accused is a juvenile, Australian law restricts the publication of identifying information. Authorities have not released his name, and the court proceedings will continue under the protections afforded to children facing criminal charges.

Layla Jeffery, a Year 7 high school student, was reported missing on 5 July after family members became increasingly concerned when they were unable to contact her. Police investigations established that she had last been seen the previous day on McCracken Street in Donald, a small farming community in Victoria’s rural west with a population of around 1,500 residents.

Her unexplained disappearance triggered an extensive search operation involving local police officers and specialist emergency response units. Members of the Dog Squad, Air Wing, Search and Rescue Squad and Missing Persons Squad joined local investigators in an urgent effort to locate the teenager.

Search teams concentrated their efforts on bushland west of Byrne Street after investigators gathered information suggesting the area could be significant to the inquiry. Officers spent several days examining difficult terrain using specialist equipment, aerial surveillance and search dogs.

Late on Thursday afternoon, police located human remains during the operation. Although formal identification procedures were completed later, investigators confirmed the remains were those of Layla Jeffery, bringing devastating news to her family, friends and the wider Donald community.

Following the discovery, detectives immediately intensified their investigation, examining potential crime scenes, gathering forensic evidence and interviewing individuals believed to have information relevant to the case.

Detective Inspector Dave Dunstan of Victoria Police’s Missing Persons Squad outlined the next phase of the investigation during a media briefing on Friday.

He confirmed that officers executed a search warrant at a residential property in Donald shortly after 11:00 a.m. local time. During that operation, police arrested a 16-year-old boy who is now facing the murder charge.

Investigators also confirmed that two women—a 53-year-old resident of Donald and a 55-year-old woman from Melbourne—were assisting police with their inquiries. Authorities have not indicated whether either woman is suspected of any criminal offence, describing them only as people assisting the ongoing investigation.

Detective Inspector Dunstan further stated that the teenage suspect was known both to Layla and to Victoria Police before the current investigation. However, he declined to provide additional details regarding the nature of those relationships, citing the active criminal proceedings.

Police have likewise not disclosed any suspected motive or explained the circumstances that investigators believe led to Layla’s death.

The investigation remains active, with forensic specialists continuing to examine evidence recovered from multiple locations. Detectives are also expected to conduct further interviews as they seek to establish a complete timeline surrounding the teenager’s disappearance and death.

Authorities have urged members of the public to avoid speculation while legal proceedings continue, emphasising that the accused is entitled to a fair judicial process and that many aspects of the investigation remain before the courts.

The case has sent shockwaves throughout Donald, where residents describe the tragedy as one of the most devastating events the community has experienced in recent memory.

In small rural towns such as Donald, where many families have known one another for generations, incidents involving young victims often have a profound emotional impact across the entire community.

Residents gathered throughout the week to support Layla’s family while many local organisations and schools began preparing counselling services for students and staff affected by the tragedy.

Messages of sympathy and remembrance quickly appeared across social media, where community members expressed grief over the loss of a young life.

Donald resident Peta Edmunds reflected the overwhelming sentiment shared by many local families when she wrote that the community’s hearts were broken by Layla’s death. She described the town as united in grief while offering condolences to the teenager’s family during an unimaginably difficult time.

Schools and local support organisations are expected to continue providing mental health assistance to students, teachers and residents in the coming days as the community begins the difficult process of mourning.

The case has also renewed broader discussions in Australia about youth violence, community safety and the challenges facing regional communities when serious crimes occur involving children.

Legal experts note that because the accused is a minor, many details of the criminal proceedings will remain subject to reporting restrictions designed to protect the integrity of the judicial process and the rights of children appearing before the courts.

The Children’s Court will determine issues including bail, detention and the future timetable of the proceedings. As with all criminal prosecutions, the charge represents an allegation, and the accused is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

Victoria Police have indicated that the investigation remains ongoing and that further updates will be provided when appropriate.

For Layla Jeffery’s family, however, the legal process marks only the beginning of a long journey following the heartbreaking loss of a 13-year-old girl whose disappearance united an entire community in hope before ending in tragedy.

As Donald continues to mourn, residents have pledged to support one another while remembering Layla, whose death has left a lasting impact on the small Victorian town she called home.
