Coastguard teams in Cornwall are preparing to call off the search for a 12-year-old girl who was swept out to sea on Wednesday afternoon while playing near the Rock Beach area, officials have confirmed. Rescue efforts, which involved lifeboats, helicopters and drones, had been ongoing for more than 24 hours but authorities said the likelihood of a safe recovery had become increasingly slim due to deteriorating weather and strong tidal currents.
The girl, whose name has not been released, was reported missing after she was seen struggling in rough surf by family members and other beachgoers. Witnesses told rescue teams that she was quickly carried away by a rip current, prompting an immediate alert and a coordinated response from the HM Coastguard, local lifeboat crews and Royal Air Force search teams.
A spokesperson for the Coastguard said the operation involved multiple search sectors, using boats to scan the shoreline and aerial surveillance to cover wider areas. “We have made every possible effort to locate the girl and have coordinated with all available agencies,” the spokesperson said. “Unfortunately, conditions in the sea remain extremely dangerous, and after careful consideration and risk assessment, the search will be stood down.”
Local police confirmed that the family has been supported by specialist officers, including victim liaison teams and crisis counsellors, as they come to terms with the incident. Residents have gathered along the cliffs and beaches, leaving flowers and notes, expressing sympathy for the family and shock at the tragedy.
Weather reports cited high winds and strong swell conditions as contributing factors, making both initial rescue attempts and extended searches hazardous for emergency crews. Authorities have reminded the public to take extreme caution near beaches and coastal areas, particularly during storms and high tides, and to heed all warning signs and lifeguard advice.
The decision to end the search does not preclude further recovery operations if new information emerges, the Coastguard added. Meanwhile, local councils are reviewing safety measures along beaches frequently visited by families, including clearer signage, safety barriers, and public awareness campaigns to prevent future tragedies.
