Man Recalls ‘Terrifying’ Dubai Missile Ordeal Amid Iran Strikes

A British tourist in Dubai has described a “terrifying” ordeal as missiles and drones launched by Iran struck parts of the United Arab Emirates amid the wider regional conflict sparked by US‑Israeli military action against Iran. The family, staying at the Fairmont Palm Hotel on Palm Jumeirah, was caught in the chaos when an explosion from nearby missile debris occurred just metres from their room. The man said he and his family initially looked forward to their holiday before the blasts “ripped through the area,” forcing them to flee for shelter amid the sounds of explosions and air‑defence interceptions looming overhead.

In footage captured from the hotel, smoke and flames could be seen rising outside as the couple and their young child realised the gravity of the situation. The experience, he said, was unlike anything they had expected in what was meant to be a leisure trip — with the shock heightened by the proximity of the blast and the intensity of the noise. McGinn, who shared the footage and account with media, said the incident felt “terrifying” and left their family in disbelief as they watched the sky and thought about what might come next.

The attack forms part of a broader series of Iranian missile and drone strikes on Gulf states, including the UAE, in retaliation for US and Israeli strikes on Iran. Defence officials in the UAE say hundreds of projectiles have been fired and the country’s air‑defence systems intercepted the majority, though debris and some impacts have caused damage at prominent locations including luxury hotels and infrastructure.

Residents and visitors alike told Reuters and other outlets how the typically calm city — a global business and tourism hub — was jolted by blasts, leading some to seek shelter in basements or interior rooms, while others reported panic and uncertainty as they tried to make sense of the explosions and rapid developments.

Authorities in the UAE have urged people to follow safety directives and stay away from windows during alerts, even as many tourists remain stranded due to extended flight disruptions and airspace closures. Dubai’s image as a secure destination has been challenged by the suddenness of the violence, though local leadership continues to frame the situation as under control and emphasise efforts to ensure civilian protection.
