Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has arrived in Saudi Arabia for talks aimed at deepening bilateral ties, following his recent offer to share Ukraine’s advanced drone expertise with the Gulf kingdom. The visit underscores Kyiv’s growing push to expand partnerships beyond Europe, as the war with Russia continues to reshape global alliances.
Zelensky’s trip comes after Ukraine showcased its drone technology, which has played a pivotal role in countering Russian forces. Saudi Arabia, which has invested heavily in defence and technology, is seen as a potential partner in developing and deploying unmanned aerial systems. Ukrainian officials say cooperation could extend to joint production and training, offering Riyadh access to battlefield-tested innovations.
In Riyadh, Zelensky met with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, discussing defence cooperation, energy security, and humanitarian aid. The Crown Prince praised Ukraine’s resilience and expressed interest in exploring technological collaboration. Analysts note that Saudi Arabia’s engagement with Ukraine reflects its broader strategy of diversifying partnerships and asserting influence in global security affairs.
The visit also carries diplomatic weight. Saudi Arabia has positioned itself as a mediator in international conflicts, hosting talks on Ukraine in 2023. Zelensky’s presence signals Kyiv’s willingness to strengthen ties with nations outside the Western bloc, particularly those with significant energy and defence capabilities.
Observers say the partnership could benefit both sides: Ukraine gains new allies and potential funding for its defence industry, while Saudi Arabia acquires cutting-edge drone expertise to bolster its military and security infrastructure.
While no formal agreements were announced, officials confirmed that discussions would continue, with joint working groups expected to explore practical steps. Zelensky emphasised that Ukraine’s technology is “battle-proven” and could help Saudi Arabia enhance its defence readiness.
