A deadly car explosion in a busy area of India’s capital, Delhi, has been confirmed as a “terror incident” by the Indian government. At least eight people were killed and 20 others injured in the blast near the historic Red Fort on Monday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet condemned the attack during a security meeting on Wednesday, describing it as a cowardly act carried out by anti-national forces. Authorities have yet to identify or arrest any suspects.
In a formal resolution, the cabinet said: “The country has witnessed a heinous terror incident, perpetrated by anti-national forces, through a car explosion. The investigation will be pursued with the utmost urgency and professionalism so that the perpetrators, their collaborators, and their sponsors are identified and brought to justice without delay.”
Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha reported that the explosion occurred around 18:52 local time (13:52 GMT) when a slow-moving Hyundai i20 stopped at a red light before detonating, damaging nearby vehicles. Three people were reportedly inside the car at the time.
Following the blast, Delhi police declared a high alert, with neighboring states including Uttar Pradesh, home to major tourist sites like the Taj Mahal, implementing increased security measures. Police, forensic experts, and security teams are conducting a detailed investigation. Home Minister Amit Shah said, “We are exploring all possibilities and will present the results to the public immediately.”
Modi extended his condolences to the families of the victims, while opposition leader Rahul Gandhi called the news “extremely heartbreaking.” The Red Fort, a 17th-century landmark visited by thousands of tourists daily, is also the site where Indian prime ministers deliver their annual Independence Day speeches.
The cabinet reiterated India’s “unwavering commitment” to a zero-tolerance policy toward terrorism, emphasizing that the nation remains resolute in confronting threats to national security.
