The Yorkshire market town of Skipton, often called “the gateway to the Dales,” has been named the happiest place to live in Great Britain.
Famous for its medieval castle and scenic canal, Skipton consistently attracts attention for its charm and exceptional quality of life. Rightmove’s “happy at home” index, now in its 14th year, awarded this accolade based on residents’ satisfaction across multiple living factors.
Located on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, Skipton scored highly for access to nature, green spaces, friendly locals, and essential services such as schools and doctors. This is the first time the town has claimed the top spot, after finishing second in 2020 and sixth last year.
The Leeds and Liverpool Canal, which winds beautifully through Skipton, may add to its enduring appeal. The town has also been recognised before: the Sunday Times named it Britain’s best place to live in 2014, and in 2017 the Office for National Statistics highlighted residents of the surrounding area as the happiest in the country.
This year, London boroughs Richmond upon Thames and Camden took second and third place in the Rightmove survey. Thousands of residents across more than 200 areas of Great Britain shared how they felt about their communities. Skipton was praised for enabling people to feel “they can be themselves” and for offering affordable housing, with the average home asking price at £326,093, below the national average of £364,833.
Ian Rigarlsford, group public affairs lead at Skipton Building Society, headquartered locally, highlighted the town’s strong community spirit. “Skipton is a place where community genuinely matters,” he said. “From lunchtime walks to enjoying views from our office, the balance this town offers is remarkable.”
Patrick McCutcheon, head of residential at Yorkshire estate agent Dacre, Son & Hartley, praised Skipton’s excellent transport links to Leeds, Bradford, and Harrogate. He added, “The historic castle lights up the colourful high street market, while the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, Pennine Way, and surrounding moors offer endless walking and biking opportunities.”
Skipton is historically significant as the birthplace of Tom Spencer, co-founder of Marks & Spencer, born in 1851.
Richmond upon Thames, which finished second, previously topped the Rightmove index and gained attention through the popular TV comedy Ted Lasso. Camden, in third place, celebrated its first podium position, recognised for its canals and proximity to green spaces like Regent’s Park.
With its blend of history, community spirit, natural beauty, and affordability, Skipton now holds the title of Britain’s happiest place to live, reflecting residents’ satisfaction and its enduring Yorkshire charm.
