Newly released documents from the U.S. Department of Justice’s “Epstein files” have focused fresh scrutiny on the web of relationships surrounding Jeffrey Epstein, the disgraced financier convicted of sex offences and later charged with sex trafficking before his death. While much of the media attention has focused on former Prince Andrew — now styled Andrew Mountbatten‑Windsor — and his friendship with Epstein, investigators and journalists have also identified a lesser‑known figure, German‑French businessman David Stern, as a potential third link in that network.

Stern, now aged in his mid‑40s, emerges from the court records as someone who not only maintained frequent contact with Epstein over years but was also closely associated with Andrew in social and professional settings prior to the public scandal. According to profiles compiled from Companies House records and other disclosures, Stern described himself in outreach materials as a business executive with a background in law and finance, and spoke Mandarin — credentials that allowed him to circulate in international circles where Epstein also operated.

He is believed to have been appointed to the advisory board of the University of Cambridge’s Judge Business School, a position he resigned from in 2026 after media and academic scrutiny intensified over his connections to Epstein and to Andrew. Documents released under the Epstein files indicate that Stern communicated with both men over at least a decade and may have acted as a professional intermediary in social and networking circles where Epstein and Andrew intersected. Stern’s name appears in thousands of newly disclosed files, a notable presence given his relatively low public profile before the disclosures.

Journalists reporting on the fallout say Stern’s interactions with Epstein pre‑date many of the more controversial episodes involving Andrew, suggesting that he may have been one of the figures who helped bridge the former royal’s introduction into Epstein’s high‑profile social milieu — particularly in business and philanthropic contexts. Stern and Andrew were photographed together at several formal events and were reported to travel in some of the same networks that Epstein cultivated, including gatherings that brought together wealthy patrons, entrepreneurs and philanthropists.

The U.S. Justice Department file releases — which total millions of pages of court records, correspondence and other materials linked to the longstanding Epstein investigation — include references not only to Epstein’s direct interactions with prominent figures but also to assistants, advisers and intermediaries who appear repeatedly across communications. Stern’s name surfaces in thousands of entries, and while no criminal charges have been made against him as of March 2026, his prominence in the files has drawn significant media and legal attention. Investigators are reportedly reviewing his role in advising or coordinating introductions between Epstein and other high‑profile individuals.

The identification of Stern as a potential “third man” linking Andrew and Epstein does not in itself constitute evidence of criminal conduct by Andrew or Stern, but it adds complexity to the broader picture of social networks, elite circles and financial associations that surrounded Epstein before and after his 2008 conviction. Stern has denied wrongdoing, and his current whereabouts are reported to be outside the UK, but questions remain about the nature and purpose of his longstanding association with both Epstein and members of the British establishment.

Law enforcement and judicial authorities are continuing to examine the Epstein files for leads that may suggest wrongdoing or unexplained exchanges within that network, and several high‑profile figures — including Stern and others named in the material — are expected to face further inquiries as legal processes unfold in multiple jurisdictions.

The English Chronicle Desk Rivers within England and Wales’ national parks are experiencing sewage pollution at twice the rate found elsewhere, according to new findings. Campaigners have condemned the situation as “outrageous,” stressing that these protected waterways should be the cleanest in the country. Research by the Campaign for National Parks (CNP) and the Rivers Trust revealed 464 water company overflow sites within national parks, with each site averaging 549 hours of sewage discharge in 2024—equivalent to eight hours daily over two months. Overall, national park rivers were subjected to 254,808 hours of sewage spills last year. The report also highlights that over half of the rivers in national parks failed to meet the legally mandated “good ecological status.” In addition to sewage, agricultural runoff containing slurry, fertiliser, and pesticides is contributing to the environmental decline. Dartmoor, the South Downs, the Broads, and Eryri (Snowdonia) were identified as the most affected parks. National parks are home to globally recognised wetlands, chalk streams, and diverse wildlife including salmon, beavers, water voles, bitterns, and eels. They attract millions of visitors and play a critical role in mitigating downstream flood risks. Campaigners are urging the government to implement stricter regulations, promised earlier this year, and to upgrade all sewage treatment facilities within national parks to the same standards as more populated regions. Evidence suggests wildlife is faring worse inside these protected areas than outside. Dr Rose O’Neill, chief executive of CNP, warned that rivers in national parks are “being poisoned, drained, and neglected” due to ageing, inadequate infrastructure. David Johnson of the Rivers Trust described the findings as a “tragic tale of underinvestment and mismanagement,” calling for urgent action to halt ongoing pollution. Sewage pollution has become a significant political issue. In July, the government pledged the largest overhaul of water regulation since 1989, promising new legislation in 2026. Despite assurances from officials including flooding minister Emma Hardy, the new regulations have yet to be enacted. DEFRA stated that the government is investing £104bn to rebuild sewage infrastructure and reduce pollution. Data from the CNP-Rivers Trust report shows that combined sewage overflows (CSOs), meant to occur only during extreme rainfall, are discharging far more frequently in national parks. Dartmoor recorded the highest total hours of sewage releases at 49,076, followed by Eryri with 47,187. Other severely affected parks included the South Downs, Broads, and the New Forest. Only Northumbria and North York Moors had sewage spill rates lower than the national average.Rivers in English and Welsh National Parks Suffer Sewage Pollution at Twice the National Rate Systemic
