In a move that signals the end of the “Year of Efficiency” and the beginning of the “Era of the Machine,” Meta Platforms has announced it will slash approximately 8,000 jobs—roughly 10% of its global workforce. The layoffs, confirmed in an internal memo from Chief People Officer Janelle Gale on Thursday, April 23, are a direct measure to offset a staggering $135 billion (£108bn) surge in artificial intelligence spending. For the social media giant, the trade-off is clear: thousands of human roles are being sacrificed to fund the massive data centers and elite silicon required to win the global AI arms race.

The cuts, set to take effect on May 20, represent Meta’s largest single downsizing since the mass layoffs of 2022 and 2023. Beyond the 8,000 pink slips, the company is also eliminating 6,000 open roles, effectively shrinking its future footprint while its capital expenditure guidance for 2026 swells to nearly double what it spent last year.

Unlike previous rounds, these layoffs are described as “structural” rather than performance-based. Meta is fundamentally “rewiring” how it operates, moving away from traditional department silos in favor of AI-focused “pods.”

The New Hierarchy: Engineers from across the company are being transferred into a centralized Applied AI organization. New role categories, such as “AI Builder” and “AI Pod Lead,” are replacing legacy titles.

The “Prometheus” Cluster: The bulk of the multi-billion-pound investment is earmarked for massive infrastructure projects, including Prometheus, a one-gigawatt AI supercluster in Ohio coming online this year.

Elite Talent War: While thousands are losing their jobs, Meta is reportedly offering eye-watering compensation packages—some worth up to $1.5 million—to poach specialized machine learning engineers from rivals like OpenAI and Google.

The announcement has been met with significant internal anxiety, particularly following a separate disclosure that Meta is testing “Model Capability” software. The program reportedly monitors employee workflows to train AI agents—a move some staff have described as “dystopian.”

“We’re starting to see projects that used to require big teams now be accomplished by a single very talented person [aided by AI],” CEO Mark Zuckerberg told investors in a recent earnings call, justifying the move toward a leaner, more automated workforce.

Meta is not alone in its ruthless pivot. On the same day, Microsoft announced it would offer voluntary retirement to approximately 8,750 US employees (7% of its domestic workforce) to similarly redirect funds toward AI infrastructure.

For the 8,000 Meta workers facing redundancy, the “generous” severance packages—including 16 weeks of base pay—are a small consolation for being the first major casualties of a $135 billion bet on a human-less future. As the “Silicon Curtain” descends, the message from Menlo Park is sobering: the company is no longer hiring humans to grow; it is hiring humans to build the software that will eventually outgrow them.
