Federal authorities have identified the suspected gunman who opened fire at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old educator and engineer from Torrance, California. The suspect, who reportedly described himself in a rambling 1,000-word manifesto as a “Friendly Federal Assassin,” remains in custody today as investigators peel back the layers of a meticulously planned attempt on the lives of top Trump administration officials.

The attack occurred at approximately 8:36 p.m. EDT at the Washington Hilton. While the President, First Lady, and Cabinet members were being served dinner inside the main ballroom, Allen allegedly attempted to charge through a security checkpoint. Armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives, he engaged in a brief exchange of gunfire with a Secret Service officer before being tackled to the ground. The officer, who was struck in his bullet-resistant vest, has since been released from the hospital.

The “Tutor of the Month”: To those in Torrance, he was a friendly neighbor and a dedicated part-time teacher at a tutoring firm, where he was named “Teacher of the Month” as recently as 2024. Former teammates described him as a “gentle” person and a “borderline genius” who rarely needed to study.

Digital Footprint: Online, Allen was an independent video game developer who had published a chemistry-based game on the Steam platform. However, his social media also revealed a darker turn toward anti-administration and anti-Christian rhetoric.

Minutes before the attack, Allen reportedly sent a manifesto to family members that opened with a jarringly casual “hello everybody!” The document, now a central piece of evidence, detailed his rage against current U.S. government policies and listed specific members of the Trump administration as his targets.

“It is clear that this individual was intent on doing as much harm and as much damage as he could,” stated U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro, who was herself a guest at the dinner. “He came prepared for a prolonged confrontation.”

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche confirmed on Sunday that federal investigators believe Allen traveled by train from Los Angeles to Washington specifically for the event. Having checked into the Washington Hilton on Friday as a guest, he was able to bypass external security cordons, a lapse that is now the subject of an urgent Secret Service review.

Allen faces a litany of federal charges, including using a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on a federal officer. Prosecutors have not ruled out adding a count of attempted assassination of the President.
