A 37-year-old man has been arrested by counter-terrorism officers in connection with a sustained campaign of violence targeting the Jewish community in London. The suspect was apprehended on Sunday, April 26, at an address near Barnstaple, Devon, on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts. His arrest marks the 26th individual taken into custody since the wave of attacks—which has utilized arson, explosives, and chemical threats—began in late March.
Metropolitan Police confirmed today that the arrest is part of a complex, ongoing investigation led by Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) London. The probe is examining a series of high-profile incidents, including arson attacks on community ambulances, synagogues, and former charity offices, as well as a separate plot targeting a Persian-language media organization critical of the Iranian government.
The investigation has taken on a significant geopolitical dimension. Deputy Commissioner Matt Jukes has identified a “serious line of inquiry” suggesting that the attacks are being carried out by “thugs for hire”—local criminals recruited by Iranian proxies to conduct a “hybrid war” on British soil.
The Proxy Connection: A group calling itself Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia (HAYI) has claimed responsibility for most of the incidents. Israeli intelligence and UK authorities believe the group is a front for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), intended to create “plausible deniability” while targeting Jewish and Israeli interests.
The Hatzola Attack: The campaign began on March 23 with the firebombing of four volunteer ambulances in Golders Green. The resulting explosion of onboard oxygen cylinders shattered the stained-glass windows of the Machzike Hadath synagogue and damaged nearby flats.
The Global Reach: Similar tactics have been reported across Europe, targeting places of worship and financial institutions linked to Jewish communities.
The arrest in Devon follows a string of “near-misses” and terrifying incidents across North West London over the past two weeks:
Finchley (April 15): An attempted firebombing at the Finchley Reform Synagogue, which shares a location with a Persian media company.
Kensington Gardens (April 17): A major security alert led to the closure of the park after jars containing a “powdered substance” were found near the Embassy of Israel. While the substance was found to be non-hazardous, the incident followed a video threat from HAYI.
Kenton (April 19): A 17-year-old boy has already pleaded guilty to arson following a firebomb attack on the Kenton United Synagogue, which caused smoke damage to the building’s medical room.
The Chief Rabbi, Ephraim Mirvis, has warned that the “sustained campaign of violence and intimidation” is gathering momentum. Speaking on social media, he thanked the police for their “tireless efforts” but noted that the community remains at its highest state of alert in decades.
“This is a dangerous moment for all of our society,” the Chief Rabbi said. “We cannot wait for lives to be lost before we understand the scale of this threat.”
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has shared the “country’s shock” at the attacks, deploying highly visible armed police patrols in Jewish neighborhoods as a deterrent. The government has already provided £3.2 million in emergency funding to replace the destroyed Hatzola ambulances and bolster security at schools and community centers.
As the 37-year-old suspect is questioned at a London police station, the Crown Prosecution Service is already managing several cases. Eight people have been charged with arson-related offenses, and one teenager has been convicted. The discovery of a suspect as far away as Devon suggests the “criminal proxy” network may have a wider geographic reach than previously understood.
For the residents of Golders Green, Hendon, and Barnet, the “Digital Iron Curtain” of security cameras and police cordons has become a daily reality. As the 26th arrest is processed, the focus remains on whether the “head of the snake”—the foreign actors allegedly funding the local “thugs”—can be effectively countered before the violence escalates further.
