The American Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recently faced a very difficult session in Washington yesterday. He appeared before the House Armed Services Committee to discuss the ongoing conflict with Iran today. This intense hearing lasted for several hours as lawmakers questioned the current direction of the war. Hegseth firmly denied that the military operation has become a difficult and draining quagmire for America. He argued that the mission remains essential for the safety of the entire American population now. The Pentagon estimates that the financial cost of this conflict has already reached twenty-five billion dollars. This massive figure includes the high price of munitions and the maintenance of heavy military equipment. Hegseth claimed that critics of the war pose a bigger threat than the Iranian government itself. He described the words of some lawmakers as reckless and very damaging to the national effort. These sharp comments were not part of his original prepared statement for the committee members today.

General Dan Caine joined Hegseth to provide military insights during this long and public testimony session. The Defense Secretary used this platform to request a massive military budget of $1.5tn this year. He suggested that this level of spending is necessary to ensure proper American deterrence globally now. However, many Democrats and some Republicans expressed deep concerns about the rising costs of the war. They questioned how the administration plans to manage such a large increase in federal military spending. Hegseth countered by stating that the budget includes a historic pay raise for lower enlisted troops. He believes this investment will strengthen the resolve of the men and women serving abroad today. Despite his optimism, the financial reality of the conflict continues to weigh heavily on the treasury. The Chief Financial Official for the Pentagon confirmed that costs are still rising every single day. This financial burden comes at a time when many Americans are worried about their own finances.

The conflict has now entered its second month despite initial predictions of a very short campaign. Donald Trump previously suggested that the entire operation would only last around four to six weeks. Hegseth compared the current situation to previous long-term deployments in Vietnam and the Afghan region today. He suggested that those historic conflicts serve as a benchmark for American endurance in difficult times. The Secretary insisted that the administration feels very proud of the undertaking against the Iranian state. Outside the hearing room, protesters chanted loudly and called the current leadership various names of reproach. Many citizens found it very hard to gain entry to the public gallery for the hearing. On social media, Donald Trump posted an image of himself surrounded by explosions and heavy weaponry. He warned that the Iranian leadership should get smart before the situation gets even worse tomorrow. The President also indicated that a naval blockade would remain in place for the foreseeable future.

Tensions reached a boiling point when California Democrat John Garamendi started his intense questioning of Hegseth. Garamendi claimed that the administration is showing astounding incompetence regarding the current Middle East military strategy. He argued that the President has led the country into a political and economic disaster today. The Congressman stated that America is now stuck in a quagmire of another very long war. He believes it is in the interest of the world for the President to succeed. Hegseth became very angry at the suggestion that the war is a failing or stuck mission. He asked the Congressman who he was actually cheering for during this very critical national time. The Secretary claimed that political hatred for Trump is blinding many people to the mission’s success. He said that calling the war a quagmire only provides free propaganda to the enemy forces. Hegseth insisted that the President has stared down Iran to ensure a much better deal.

The Republican chair of the committee Mike Rogers supported the massive budget proposal during the meeting. He noted that adversaries are spending more of their total wealth on defense than America does. Rogers believes the proposed $1.5tn figure reflects the true cost of keeping the nation safe today. Meanwhile, Representative Adam Smith questioned if such a huge spending increase could be managed responsibly now. He also raised concerns about the diplomatic isolation that the United States is currently facing abroad. Smith pointed out that the administration has pushed away many traditional allies during this difficult time. He mentioned that the President recently insulted the French leader and his wife in a public way. This behavior makes it harder to ask international partners to join the current military coalition today. The lack of global support remains a major point of contention for many American political leaders. They worry that fighting this war alone will lead to even greater long-term national costs.

A specific strike on a school in Minab was also discussed during the long committee hearing. Iranian officials claim that over one hundred and sixty people died in that specific military strike. Most of the victims of that tragic event were reportedly children attending the school that day. Representative Smith criticized the Pentagon for failing to address the incident under oath until this Wednesday. He suggested that the silence of the administration gives the world a very bad public impression. Hegseth and General Caine were forced to answer questions about this event for the first time. Smith argued that making such mistakes without an apology suggests that the military does not care. This part of the hearing was particularly somber as lawmakers considered the human cost of war. The incident has become a focal point for international criticism of the joint US-Israeli military campaign. It highlights the complex and often tragic nature of modern urban warfare in the Middle East.

Another tense moment occurred when Hegseth claimed that Iranian nuclear facilities were completely obliterated by strikes. Congressman Smith immediately challenged this statement based on previous claims of an imminent nuclear threat from Iran. He asked if the recent military operation had actually accomplished anything of lasting substance for the nation. Hegseth responded by saying that the Congressman was completely missing the main point of the mission. He stated that Iran has not abandoned its nuclear ambitions despite the damage to their physical facilities. The hearing continued to follow predictable partisan lines as both sides argued over the war’s ultimate goal. Democrats focused on the surging fuel costs that are affecting families across the entire United States. They argued that the closure of the Strait of Hormuz contradicts promises to lower household bills. Hegseth chose not to answer these economic questions directly during his long period of testimony. Instead, he asked about the cost of allowing Iran to possess a powerful nuclear weapon.

Some Republicans like Nancy Mace expressed their strong support for the Secretary and his current military plans. She told the committee that she was very impressed with the progress made in the war. This was a change from her previous public questions about the justification for the entire conflict. Despite this support, many observers believe the war has reached a state of a difficult stalemate. A fragile ceasefire is currently in place but three aircraft carriers remain in the region today. This is the first time in two decades that such a large naval force is present. Trump has rejected offers to reopen the shipping lanes in exchange for lifting the blockade now. Democrats have failed to pass resolutions that would limit the power of the President to fight. While Republicans back the leader now, some are waiting for the right moment to change positions. The political atmosphere in Washington remains highly charged and very divided over the Iranian conflict. Hegseth and Caine will move to the Senate tomorrow to face even more intense questioning.
