Luka Modric played his final game for Real Madrid on Wednesday. It ended in a 4-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup semifinal. The match took place at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford on July 9, 2025.
Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso said Modric’s legacy is bigger than one game. The Croatian star will join AC Milan next.
Modric won the Ballon d’Or in 2018. He is the most decorated player in Real Madrid’s history. He joined the club from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012. Since then, he played 597 matches and won 28 trophies. That includes six Champions League titles.
“This is not the ending we wanted,” Alonso said. “It’s a painful loss. But people will not remember this game. They will remember all the great moments.”
“He is a legend of football and of Real Madrid,” he added. “The 25 minutes he played today won’t change that.”
Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois also praised Modric.
“He always gets a standing ovation,” Courtois said. “Not just from Madrid fans, but from everyone. He’s a great player and a great teammate. We will miss him.”
